PKS/PMD automation system
• It describes

OVERVIEW

• Experion PKS/PMD is distributed control system (DCS) witch is

based on PMD technology
– P = Process
– M = Machine
– D = Drives

The Experion PKS system’s architecture is based on a

department built around the System Net. The System Net
is an Ethernet-based fault tolerant TCP/IP network, which
also integrates the automation system as part of the mill’s
other information systems.

• Department name is project specific system name

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE (1)

• A system department comprises the following components:

• PMD Controllers (FC) that are used to control processes and
process equipment connected through a fieldbus or and I/O
highway to the system.
• Design Module (DM) that is used to define the automation
system’s structure and create application definitions as
graphic hierarchical structures enabling easy management of
comprehensive complex application solutions.
• PMD server that acts as the system data repository and
attends to data transfer routing and alarm and event handling,
among other things.
• HMIWeb (Human Machine Interface) user interfaces that are
based on HMIWeb technology features to allow flexible
integration of process, production and business data.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE (2)

Communication in the System Net takes place using protocols of the

TCP/IP protocol family. The IP (Internet Protocol) is used as the net
layer and the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) or the UDP (User
Datagram Protocol) as the transport layer. The data link layer is
implemented using the Ethernet technique.

Physical layer

The FTE protocol (developed by Honeywell) is implemented in a manner

that allows the use of commercial off-the-shelf Ethernet-connected
devices to establish the required fault tolerance. The FTE protocol
is located between the Ethernet and IP layers in the protocol
stack and the applications are not aware of its use.

SYSTEM NET

The physical network topology of the department combined by the System Net is a hierarchical star with one or two
layers. The first level comprises a redundant pair (FTE) of department switches which form the core of the department
network.

The second level contains the redundant edge switch pairs. Edge switches are needed, if all the devices cannot
connect to the department switch because of small number of ports or for any other reason. The edge switch pairs are
always connected to the department switch pair of the department. The edge switches must not be directly connected
to each other.

PMD SERVER (1)

• HARDWARE:
– Dell Power Edge 2600 server computer provided with an Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz/400 MHz
processor with 512 megabytes of RAM memory.
– 17 inch SVGA display.
– Two Intel 100 Pro S Ethernet interface cards for FTE.
– NetRAID- 1 Mi RAID driver to carry out the hard disk mirroring
• SOFTWARE:
– Windows 2000 server operating system
– PMD Software Components, which attend to tasks pertaining to the automation
system’s data transfer, data processing and data storage.
– PMD OPC Data Server, which provides the interface in accordance with the OPC
standard for the PMD Controllers.
– PMD OPC Event Server, which ensures that alarms occurring in the Experion PKS
system’s PMD Controller are transferred to the PMD server’s database to be further
distributed to HMIWeb user interfaces.
– SQL Server 2000, which is used as the database software.

PMD SERVER (2)

• The PMD server acts as the repository for system data that is crucial to the system
operation:
– System software, system definitions and application configurations
 At system start-up, the server automatically loads the system software and applications to the
PMD Controllers
– Generates the route maps that are used to solve the data transfer routes through the System Net.

• Core functions related to data transfer and data processing are managed by the PMD
server:

Reporting Data transfer and data transfer routing

History collection Alarm and event management

Display storage and distribution to various user interfaces

PMD SERVER (3)

• The repository data is also available for third-party systems:

– Other systems and programs, which support the OPC standard, can use
the interface to read and write automation system data.

APPLICATION TOOL (DESING MODULE) (2)

• Hierarchical top-down application structure

• The application can be tested in the form of a block diagram
through simulation on the Design Module screen.
• Application is loaded to PMD controller and living process
values can be displayed from the blocks being executed in the
system.
• All application modifications can also be made and tested on
the Design Module with the system on-line without disturbing
the system and the process being controlled.
