man’s thinking about the world to
determine the connection of your
research with what people know about it.
Purposes of Review of Related Literature (RRL)
1. To obtain background knowledge of your research
2. To relate your study to the current condition or situation of the
world
3. To show the capacity of your research work to introduce new
knowledge
4. To expand, prove, or disprove the findings of previous research
studies
5. To increase your understanding of the underlying theories,
principles, of concepts of your research
6. To explain the technical terms involved in your research study
7. To highlight the significance of your work with the kind of
evidence it gathered to support the conclusion of your research
8. To avoid repeating previous research studies
9. To recommend the necessity of further research on a certain
topic
Styles or Approaches of RRL

1. Traditional Literature Review

To do a review of related literature in a

traditional way is to summarize present forms of
knowledge on a specific subject.

2. Systematic Literature Review

As indicated by its name, systematic, which

means methodological, is a style of RRL that
includes sequential acts review of related literature.
Sample RRL Introduction

This Chapter presents the different researches

and other literatures from both foreign and local
researchers which have significant bearings on the
variables included in the research. It focuses on
several aspects that will help in the development of
this study. The study is generally concentrating on
the capability of SHS students of ACLC College of
Butuan to conduct a qualitative study. The contents
of this review comes from published journals and
other existing theses and dissertations, foreign or
local that are believed to be useful in the
advancement of this study.
Sample Literature Review
SHS Research in the Philippines
Adequate investigations were conducted to
find out the ability of SHS learners to make quality
research studies. Perez (2016) stated that the current
level of SHS students’ competence in conducting
qualitative research in the secondary schools of
Caraga Region is below average. Moreover, a
national study concluded that majority of the
researches produced by secondary students are
unable to surpass the competencies required by the
Department of Education (DepEd) and other
secondary research organizations (Santos and
Gomez, 2018).
Sample Concluding Statement of RRL

Certainly, all these literature reviews—each with its own

specific goals—have provided informative and valuable
overviews of the state of knowledge regarding the
capability of SHS students in conducting scholarly works,
particularly qualitative research. However, to form a
more comprehensive and precise view of the said topic,
the researcher intends to extend these reviews
specifically on the capability of the SHS students in ACLC
College of Butuan.
