INTRODUCTION

● The Abbasid Kingdom was the third Islamic kingdom


● The Abbasid caliphs were Arabs descended from Abbas ibn Abd al-
Muttalib, one of the youngest uncles of Muhammad and of the same Banu
Hashim clan
● The Abbasid Caliphate had two major periods :-
● The first period lasted from 750-1258 CE. Referred as the Golden Age of
Islam.
● In 1258 CE, the capital city of Baghdad was sacked by the Mongols
causing the Abbasids to flee to Egypt
The Abbasid Rebellion
❖ In 747 the Abbasids raised their black flags of rebellion in the Province of
Khorasan near Merv after they gained support across the eastern parts of the
Muslim world.
❖ The Abbasids armies were moved westward, towards the rest of Persia and Iraq
after they seized power over Merv.
❖ The Abbasid family moved to Kula and started to organize the overthrow of the
Umayyad government with the help of the local people. This established them as the
rulers of the city.
❖ The first public demonstration to Abdul-Abbas was made in Kufa when he was
declared caliph in 749.
The Abbasid Rebellion

● Baghdad became the centre of dissemination of knowledge, ideas and


goods
● Foreign works were translated and preserved.
● Baitul Hikmah was built.
● The involvement of Ulama’ in writings (Fiqh, Tafsir, History)
● Developed more facilities
● Introduced systematic methods of translating and writing
● Separation of Islamic knowledge
● Expanded Islamic research all over Europe
The Golden Age
The Crisis of Abbasid Caliphate
● From 6th and 7th century. In education fields, writing books declined, there was only summarizing.
● The productivity of theologian decreased and the value of fanatism increased.
● Abbasid caliphate had a large territory but they did not have enough strong power in maintaining the
more distant provinces.
● Caliphate and prime minister handled executive government. Prime minister’s position was always
changing. Until the last caliphate (Al Musta’shim), the chosen prime minister was Ibnu Al-Alqomi
(Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Ali bin Abi Thalib) who provocated Genghis khan (the leader of Mongols).
● Mongols arrived in Baghdad, destroyed Bagdhah, and tackled Khalifah Al-Mustaksim.
● Monghols were Bedouin, they did not appreciate knowledge, they did not know Arabic language, they
only knew war.
● Since 656H (1258M), Islamic world does not have caliphate.
