DEFINITION OF BIOGRAPHY

 Biography text is a detailed description or account of a

person’s life and written by someone else, it is nonfiction
text.
 biography belongs to the recount text category.
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF
BIOGRAPHY:

 Autobiography
An autobiography tells the story of a person’s own
life. While that person writes his own account, he or
she may take guidance from a ghostwriter or
collaborator.
 Memoir

This is a more focused writing than an

autobiography or a biography. In a memoir, a writer
narrates the details of a particular event or situation
that occurred in his or her lifetime.
 Biography
A biography narrates the life story of a person, as
written by another person or writer. It is further
divided into five categories:
1. Popular biography
2. Historical biography
3. Literary biography
4. Reference biography
5. Fictional biography
FUNCTION OF BIOGRAPHY

 To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any

accomplishments this person may be known for.
 To give much information easily and educate the readers.
CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOGRAPHY

 Biography is not written by subject and always written in

the third person.
 Based on research.

 Describes the person’s surroundings (where, when and

how the person lived).
 Use vivid language to narrate events.
GENERIC STRUCTURE

 Orientation (Introduction)
It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the
background information of the person.

 Events
In events, should be in chronological order.

 Re-Orientation (Closing)
It consists of a conclusion or comment or the writer. Tell
about the achievement or the contribution of the person.
GRAMMAR AND LANGUAGE FEATURES

1. Simple Past Tense

Example:
 Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch,
Worcestershire on 1 February 1994.
 He is the son of Anne Cox (née Selley) and Desmond
“Des” Styles, who worked in finance.
 Many of his ancestors were farm laborers in Norfolk.

 Styles was raised in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire after his

parents moved there along with his older sister, Gemma,
when he was a child.
 He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School.
2. Use of Action verbs.
Example:
 Styles launched his own record label, Erskine Records, in May
and he signed a recording contract with Columbia Records as a
solo artist, the same label behind One Direction, in June.
 Styles wrote the song “Someday” in collaboration with
Meghan Trainor for Michael Bublé’s album Nobody but
Me, released in October.
3. Use of names of specific people.
4. Use of connectives to do with time (last year, then, at the same
time, next, on Tuesday 24 May, later, before, meanwhile).
5. Use Temporal Sequence and Temporal Conjunction.
 Temporal Sequence (urutan waktu)

 Temporal Conjunction (konjungsi temporal).

Example :
 Styles’ parents divorced when he was seven and his mother
later was remarried to Robin Twist; he died in 2017.
Example:
Tun Haji Abdul Razak bin Hussein, (born March 11, 1922,
Pekan, Pahang state, Federated Malay States [now Malaysia]—died Jan. 14,
1976, London, Eng.), prime minister, foreign minister, and defense minister
of Malaysia from 1970 to 1976.
A lawyer by training, Abdul Razak joined the civil service in 1950,
entered politics in 1955, and was a key figure in gaining his country’s
independence from Britain in 1957. As deputy prime minister and defense
minister (1957–70) and as minister of rural development (1959–69)
under Tunku Abdul Rahman, first prime minister of independent Malaya
(Malaysia from 1963), Abdul Razak was largely responsible for the country’s
progress in rural and national development. Appointed head of the National
Operations Council set up with emergency powers in 1969, he steered the
country through that year’s violent disturbances between Malays and Chinese.
As prime minister from 1970, he pursued a policy of nonalignment, in
furtherance of which he established relations with mainland China in 1974.
 In 1959 he was awarded the Seri Maharaja Mangku
Negara, one of Malaya’s (and Malaysia’s) highest
honours, which carries the title of tun.
