Marian M. Garcia Subject Teacher Objectives: 1. Distinguish and differentiate among and between different hydrometeorological hazards.
2. Apply appropriate measures /
interventions before, during, and after hydrometeorological hazards. What is hydrometeorological hazard? Hydrometeorology: it’s a branch of meteorology and hydrology that studies the transfer of water and energy between the land surface and the lower atmosphere.
Hazard:any source that can cause
harm or damage to humans, property or the environment. Hydrometeorological hazard is “Process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological that may cause loss of life, injury , health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services and environmental damage”. Tropical Cyclones is a rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical waters. Classification of Tropical Cyclones 1. Tropical Depression (TD) – a tropical cyclone with maximum winds of up to 61 kph. 2. Tropical Storm (TS) – a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 62 to 88 kph. 3. Severe Tropical Storm (STS) – a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 89 to 117 kph. 4. Typhoon (TY) – a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 118 to 220 kph. 5. Super Typhoon (STY) – a tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed exceeding 220 kph A typhoon is a severe weather disturbance characterized by strong winds and heavy rains which revolve around a central low pressure area. Typhoon Structure RAdio Detection And Ranging
A radar sends out electromagnetic
waves to the atmosphere that is then reflected by hydrometeors present in the sky. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 WINDS: 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hr
No damage to very light damage.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #2 WINDS: 61-120 kph may be expected in at least 24 hr
Light to moderate damage
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #3 WINDS: 121-170 kph may be expected in at least 18 hr
Moderate to heavy damage.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #4 WINDS: 171-220 kph may be expected in at least 12 hr
Heavy to very heavy damage
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #5 WINDS: > 220 kph may be expected in at least 12 hr
Very heavy to widespread damage.
ACT IT OUT Identify the following: 1. A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of up to 61 kph? 2. A tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 62 to 88 kph.? 3. A tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 68 to 117 kph? 4. A tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of up to 118 to 220 kph 5. A tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed exceeding 220 kph? 6. It is a branch of meteorology and hydrology that studies the transfer of water and energy between the land surface and the lower atmosphere. 7. Any source that can cause harm or damage to humans, property or the environment. 8. It is a phenomenon of atmospheric, that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage”. 9. It is a rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical waters. 10. It is use to forecasts track of the movement of tropical cyclone? Enumeration: Enumerate the following. 1-6. Give at least 2 precautionary or safety measures before, during and after the typhoon.
7-11. Classifications of Tropical Cyclones
12-15. Give at least 3 names of tropical
cyclone that hits the country in 2019. 1. Which comes first, lightning or thunder?
