What are touch screens
A touch screen is a computer display screen that serves as an
input device.
When a touch screen is touched by a finger or stylus, it
registers the event and sends it to a controller for processing.
History and development
The father of the touch screen
technology is Dr. Samuel Hurst. In
1971, while he was working as an
instructor at the University of
Kentucky Research Foundation,
developed the first touch opaque
sensor .

Why use touch screen
Touch screens provide direct
navigation and accessibility
through physical touch control,
thus eliminating the need for a
traditional computer mouse and
keyboard.
This makes touch screen
monitors far more conservative
on space and easier to transport,
bringing us neatly to our next
benefit.
Elements of touch screen system
It is made up of 3 basic elements
• sensor
• controller and
• software driver.
Elements of touch screen system
• A touch screen has the ability to detect a touch within the
given display area.
• All the variants of touch screen technology carry their own
distinctive characteristics, with individual benefits and
limitations.
Touch screen technologies
The 5 Types Of Touch Screen Technology
• 5-Wire Resistive
• Surface Capacitive
• Projected capacitive
• SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) and
• Infrared
5-Wire Resistive
It is composed of a glass panel and a film screen, each covered
with a thin metallic layer, separated by a narrow gap.
5-Wire Resistive
Advantages Disadvantages
• Can be activated with virtually • Lower image clarity compared

• Low power consumption. objects.
• Resistant to surface
contaminants and liquids (dust,
oil, grease, moisture).
Surface Capacitive
In a surface capacitive touch screen monitor, a transparent
electrode layer is placed on top of a glass panel, and covered
by a protective cover.

surface contaminants and
liquids (dust, oil, grease,
water droplets).
• High scratch resistance.
Projected capacitive
A projected capacitive is composed of a sheet of glass
with

embedded transparent electrode films and an IC chip,
which creates a three dimensional electrostatic field.
Projected capacitive
Advantages Disadvantages
• Excellent image clarity. • Sensitive to EMI/RFI.
• More resistant to scratching • Must be activated via

contaminants and liquids
(dust, oil, grease, moisture).
• Multi-touch (two-touch).
Surface Acoustic Wave
SAW touch screen monitors utilize a series of piezoelectric
transducers and receivers along the sides of the monitor’s glass
plate to create an invisible grid of ultrasonic waves on the
surface.
Surface Acoustic Wave
Advantages Disadvantages
• Excellent image clarity. • Will not activate with hard
• Even better scratch items (pen, credit card, or
resistance than capacitive. fingernail).
• High “touch-life”. • Water droplets may cause
false-triggering.
• Solid contaminants on the
screen can create non-touch
areas until they are
removed.
Infrared (IR) Touch
Infrared touch screen monitors do not overlay the display with
an additional screen or screen sandwich. Instead, infrared
monitors use IR emitters and receivers to create an invisible
grid of light beams across the screen.
Infrared (IR) Touch
Advantages Disadvantages
• Highest image clarity and • Accidental activation may

• Unlimited “touch-life”. • Dust, oil, or grease build up on

• Sensitive to water, snow, rain.
• May be sensitive to ambient
light interference.
• Higher cost.
Some applications
• Trade show displays
• Employee time clocks
• Museum/tourism displays
• Home automation systems
• Gaming systems
• Restaurant systems
Conclusion
Though the touch screen technology contains some
limitations it’s very user friendly, fast, accurate, easy
for the novices & fun to operate. It has been widely
accepted.
And now by just modifying a little it can replace
the mouse and key board completely in near future.
