LEADERSHIP SEMINAR

FRANCISCO C. POLIRAN, JR.

L E A D E R S H I P

•What comes to your mind

when you think of
LEADERSHIP?
L E A D E R S H I P

•But leadership is not all about

talents and skills
•It is more on CHARACTER
L E A D E R S H I P

•Everyone of us can become a

leader.
•Because leadership is all about
WHO YOU ARE.
L E A D E R S H I P

YOU KNOW WHAT?

• The real message of leadership is burried

deep over the years.
PROBLEM:

Thousands of different concepts and models

have all come together to form a complex idea
of leadership.
L E A D E R S H I P

But let me tell you today that leadership is

SIMPLE, NOT EASY, BUT SIMPLE.
Everything you know about leadership comes
from a two rule or principle:
These two rules or principle are lost and burried
deep as time pass by.
L E A D E R S H I P

• Let us try to go back in the past of how they

understood leadership.

SOME IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES:

• LAO TZU
He believes that a leader is best when people
barely know he exist, when his work is done, his
aim fulfilled they will say we did it ourselves.
L E A D E R S H I P

• SUN TZU
He said that a general who advances
without coveting fame and retreat
without fearing disgrace, whose only
thought is to protect his country and do
service for his sovereign is the JEWEL OF
THE KINGDOM.
L E A D E R S H I P

• CICERO 1st century B.C.E

A leader can only deliver results to the
other people.

• JESUS 1st century A.D

If anyone would be great let him be your
servant.
L E A D E R S H I P

•All of these important personalities

agreed that leadership was not all about
DOMINION but leadership is all about
SERVICE.
L E A D E R S H I P

UNTIL WE COME IN THE 16TH CENTURY

• NICOLLO MACHIAVELLI
In his book “THE PRINCE” that a leader
SHOULD MAINTAIN POWER AT ALL COST
even to the pointbof usung deceit for the
sake of maintaining fame and victory.
A leader should maintain power by
falsehood or by deceit.
L E A D E R S H I P

• 19th Century
“That leaders are BORN, NOT MADE.”
• All these principles burried in the
idea of TRUE LEADERSHIP.
L E A D E R S H I P

• Everything you know about leadership starts from this RULE

NO. 1:

RULE #1:

IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU!

L E A D E R S H I P

• ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
A good leader can inspire people to have
confidence in their leader. But a great
leader can inspire people to have
confidence in themselves.
WHY?
Because they get rule #1.
L E A D E R S H I P

• But the best leader CREATES LEADERS, NOT

FOLLOWERS.

• It was in the 19th century who brought back

to the key of leadership to rule #1 in the
person of Robert Greenleaf, he said that
“leadership begins with the natural feeling
that one wants to serve, to serve first.
L E A D E R S H I P

SECOND SESSION

• John Maxwell talks about five (5) levels of

leadership:
People follow because:

1. They have to
2. They like you
L E A D E R S H I P

3. Achievements
4. You help them grow
5. Who you are and what you represent.

Each level go deeper and deeper and forms a deeper

commitment.
If you move to another level, it’s all about CHOICE, NOT
YOUR CHOICE, BUT THEIR CHOICE.

And this is really the idea of rule #2.

L E A D E R S H I P

• RULE #2:
IT’S ONLY ABOUT YOU!

“If you want to create a change around

you, it starts with WHO YOU ARE AND
HOW YOU BEHAVE.”
Because you cannot change others if you cannot
change YOURSELF.
L E A D E R S H I P

• LAO TZU
“He who conquers others is strong, he who
conquers himself is mighty.”

• CICERO
“The enemy is within the gates.”
L E A D E R S H I P

IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S

ONLY ABOUT YOU.
