Lesson 4:

When
Technology
and Human
Cross
TECHNOLOGY
The word
technology comes from
two Greek words,
transliterated techne and
logos. Techne means art,
skill, craft, or the way,
manner, or means by
which a thing is gained.
Logos means word, the
utterance by which inward
thought is expressed, a
saying, or an expression
Necessity
or
want?
Television sets,
Mobile Phones,
Computer and Humanity
Kantar Media
• 92 percent of the urban homes and 70 percent of
rural homes own at least one television set.

• The current counts of households with television set

already reached 15.135 million, (Noda 2012)
Television
Paul Gottlieb Nipknow
• German student
• 1800’s was successful in his
attempt to send images
• through wires with the aid of
rotating metal disk.
• “electric telescope” with 18 lines
of resolution
“electric telescope”
• Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton
who was English scientist and Boris
Rosing who was a Russian scientist,
used a cathcode ray tube in addition
to the mechanical scanner system.
• “mechanical and
electronic television”
Boris Rosing

Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton

Mobile
Phones
Martin Cooper
• A senior engineer at Motorola
• Made the world first mobile phone
call

• 1.1 kilograms and measured

228.6x127x44.4 mm
• 30 minute talk time and took 10
hours to charge
• On 1983, the first commercial
mobile phone vailable in public
known as Motorola Dynatac
8000X (Goodwon,2016)
TECHNOLOGY
Computer
Charles Babbage
• Designed the analytical
engine which was used as the
basic framework of the
computers even until the
present time.
First design of computer was so big
that could occupy whole floors of
building

“ Osborne” was the first
ever true portable released
on April 1981
Roles Played
by this
Technological
Advancement
Television
• Used as platform for advertisement and dissemination
• Serves as a recreational activity and good stress reliever
• Good platform for different propagandas and advocates
• A good way to bond with one family members

Mobile Phones
• Used for communication
• Very portable and convenient

Robotics
and
Humanity
A preliminary extract of the relevant definition is (IFR, 2012)

• A robot is actuated mechanism programmable in two or more axes

with degree of autonomy, moving with its environment to perform
intended tasks.
• A service robot that performs useful tasks for humans or equipment
excluding industrial automation application
• A personal robot or a service robot for personal use is a service robot
used for non commercial task, usually by laypersons.

Roles
Played by
Robot
• Ease the workload of
mankind
• Make life more efficient and
less stressful
• Perform complicated
activities
• Pleasure, entertainment in
parks or exhibits
• Toys, child-friendly
• Used in movies
Law one:
• A robot may not inquire a human
being or through inaction, allow a
human being to come to harm.
Law two:
• A robot must obey the orders given by
human beings except where such
orders would conflict with the first law
Law three:
Isaac Asimov • A robot must protect its own existence
as long as such protection does not
conflict with the first and second law
Ethical
Dilemmas Faced
by Robotics
1. Safety
• Who should be held
accountable if someone’s
safety is compromised by a
robot?
• Who should be blamed, the
robot, the agent using the
robot, or the
maker/inventor of the
robot?
2. Emotional
component
• It is not completely
impossible for robots to
develop emotions.
• What if robots become
sentient? Should they be
granted robot rights?
