LEAST LEARNED SKILL

- To add 2-digit numbers with regrouping
Pre-requisite Concepts and skills:
- addition of two 1-digit numbers
-identify the place value of tens and ones
-to visualize addition using longs and units
Watch the video on how to use the Project Sum in addition of numbers with regrouping.
II. GUIDE CARD Look at Agnes’ fruit stand. What fruits do you see?

12 19
How many apples are there? If
Agnes will add the mangoes,
how many fruits are there in all?
Problem is solved with
the help of Super
Addition !!!!!
We can solve the problem by adding the numbers!
Solution 2:Using the idea of expanded
form
of a number. We can rewrite12 into 10 + 2,
Solution 1: Act It Out 18 into 10 + 8.
So,
Call one pupil to act as
12 10 + 2
Agnes. This pupil acts out 19 10 + 9
the situation. The pupil _______________________
counts the fruits after 20 + 11
putting them together. We can rewrite 11 into 10+1.
So, 20 +10+1
There are 31 fruits in all.
= (20+10)+1
=30+1
=31
So, there are 31 fruits in all.
In solution 1, how did you find
We counted the total number of fruits?
the fruits.
Note: Pupils may give the following solution which is incomplete because what
they know is adding numbers without regrouping. However, we can use this
solution to build up the idea of adding numbers with regrouping. This process
should be illustrated by using real longs and units.
How to use the longs and units model to arrive at 31?
This can form 1 long
12 19
+

When we combine the 2 units and 9 units, there are 11 units in all.How many longs can we form from 11 units? We can
form 1 long. After forming 1 long, how many units are left? There is 1 unit left.
We can combine this 1 long with 2 longs, so how many longs do we
have now? We have now 3 longs. After the process we have now 3
longs and 1 unit. The process is called regrouping.
Remember that 1 long is = to 10 units, so how many units are there
in 3 longs? There are 30 units. In 3 longs and 1 unit there are 31
units. So, we can say that 12 + 19 = 31
Keep in Mind…….
Using the Place Value Chart, we can also add the numbers. Focus on this idea:
- Add 1 to 2-digit numbers with
TENS ONES regrouping:
1 -Write the two numbers vertically
1 2 or in column.
1 9 Add the numbers in the ones
3 1 place then regroup the sum into
tens and ones.
31 fruits in all -Add all the numbers in the tens
place.
Challenge Yourself!

Add the numbers . Use the Project Sum in solving the equations.
