MIDWIFERY IN COMMUNITY

The midwife profession is considered to have an important role in the community.

Head of the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative Najib M Assifi said that among all
maternal health problems in Indonesia, one of the most serious problems to be resolved is the issue of
maternal death. To handle this, a midwife's primary role is needed. "Midwives are at the forefront in
providing health services to pregnant women," Najib said during the signing of the MOU and the
discussion of the Center of Excellence Cooperation in 5 Midwifery Schools in Indonesia, Jakarta on July
29, 2019.
There are several professional advantages that midwives have. First, midwives usually speak the local
language of the community. With this expertise, midwives can easily communicate with pregnant women.
The midwife can also explain the condition of the mother's pregnancy and motivate the mother to want to
maintain her health during the pregnancy period.
Conversely, if the mother's condition is in trouble, the midwife can easily communicate it. With the
proximity of the midwife and the pregnant woman, the midwife could have invited the mother to
immediately deliver if there was a problem in the mother's womb.

16
◍ Smooth communication can also be established between the midwife and the
mother's family. Midwives can explain more about the health condition of
the mother to the husband of the pregnant mother or in-laws or the extended
family of the mother. "To the extended family of the pregnant woman, the
midwife can explain in more detail about the condition of the mother while
at the same time asking that the family participate in maintaining and
supporting the health of the mother's pregnancy," Najib said. With the help of
families who help supervise midwives, handling maternal pregnancy
problems can be faster and easier to do. "So the midwife has many
responsibilities
