Group Members: Arsalan Ahmed Kuldeep Lohana Abstract: ◦The purpose of this project is to design the circuit and implement the logic of a digital combinational lock which will be used as an on and off system for a LED cube built using digital ICs. INTRODUCTION/THEORETICA L CONTEXT: ◦We are aiming to build an electronic lock which allows the user to secure any device such as doors, money vaults, connected as an output to this lock’s circuit. This circuit will be a cheap substitute to the other locking systems as this device will only use small electronic items like ICs (mainly comparator IC) and will also be a lot simpler as we have used simple combinational logic to build this instead of using complicated sequential circuit. A password can be assigned by the admin which is used to unlock the lock. ◦The other part of our project is a 3x3x3 3D LED cube (connected as an output to our lock) with changing pattern. This device will also be more economical and inexpensive than others for the same reasons as mentioned for the electronic lock. This LED cube can be used for decoration at homes and also for entertainment purposes. RATIONALE OF THE SOLUTION PROPOSED: ◦In today’s world there is too much emphasis on security and lock is such a device that can ensure this. This project aims to build a lock which can be administered by someone who wants to secure his place and the users will be able to unlock the lock if they enter the assigned password. This will be convenient to use as the owner of a place can save a password and he can tell it only to those he chooses. ◦On the other decoration items are becoming fairly common nowadays. A LED cube will be a good addition to this list because it will be attractive as well as inexpensive as it is designed using some LEDs and common ICs. RESOURCES REQUIRED: ● Different Integrated Circuits (ICs) like 7485(Comparator), 7447(Display Driver), 4020(ripple-carry binary counter), 555(timer) ● 27 LEDS ● Capacitors ● Switches or push buttons ● Resistors ● 7-Segment Displays ● Power Supply ● Connecting wires and jumper wires ● Breadboards BLOCK DIAGRAMS/SCHEMATIC: Lock: LED Cube: Integrated Circuits: 1) IC 7485: This IC is actually a 4 bit Magnitude comparator which compares the saved password and user input (in BCD form) and gives a high on A=B pin if both the passwords are the same. 2) IC 7447: This IC is a BCD to 7-segment decoder/driver IC. It accepts a binary coded decimal as input and converts it into a pattern to drive the seven- segment for displaying digits 0 to 9. 3) IC 555: It works as square-wave form generator with duty cycle varying from 50% to 100%, Oscillator and can also provide time delay in circuits. It provides the clock for the binary counter. 4) IC 4020: The 4020 is a 14-stage binary counter with a clock input , an overriding asynchronous master reset input (MR) and twelve fully buffered outputs (Q0, and Q3 to Q13). This is responsible for the transitions in the LED cube. DISCUSSION ON COST EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SOLUTION: ◦The implementation of the lock and the LED cube is not very expensive when it comes to the cost. We haven’t used any complicated and expensive components like flip flops, storage elements for the lock so this cuts off our prices. ◦Also for the LED cube simple and inexpensive ICs and LEDS are used which are also not very expensive. CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDE D FUTURE DIRECTIONS: ◦With minor modifications, this circuit can be implemented to save passwords with more digits. This can increase the security of the place at which the lock is installed because then it would be difficult to break into the lock. ◦The LED cube can be extended to 4x4x4 and so on which will add to the attractiveness of the decorating item.
