Synopsis

1 OBJECTIVE:
The project aims at creating an advance quiz display with seven segment indica-
tionwhich would serve the need of buzzer rounds of quizzes. It can accommodate
up to 8 teams and is used to display to indicate the team that pressed the switch
first. This circuit uses easily available integrated circuits and push-to-ON and
push-to-OFF switches, making it feasible. It is easy to understand and hence
making it suitable for being used even in school level quizzes. The idea has been
verified theoretically and is ready to be executed.

2 TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES:

Technology used in this project is flip-flop. A flip-flop is a circuit which exists in
one of two states and so can store information. Flip-flops are non linear circuits,
meaning the output from one of its gates is fed ’back’ to be processed with the
input signal. In this project various IC’s are used:

• IC74373 : The IC 74LS373 is a transparent latch It is a 20 pin IC comprises

of eight input data lines (D0-D7) and eight output lines (O0-O7). The
OE pin was meant for Output enable and LE pin for Latch enable. And
the rest two pins VCC for power supply and GND for Ground. The IC
74LS373 comprises eight D flip flops through which the input was given
to the each pins of the IC.

• IC74147: IC is a TTL encoder feature priority decoding of the inputs to

ensure that only the highest-order data line is encoded.

• IC7447: 74LS47 is a BCD to 7-segment decoder/driver IC. It accepts a

binary coded decimal as input and converts it into a pattern to drive a
seven-segment for displaying digits 0 to 9. Binary coded decimal (BCD)
is an encoding in which each digit of a number is represented by its own
binary sequence (usually of four bits).

• IC7404: 7404 is a NOT gate IC. It consists of six inverters which perform
logical invert action. The output of an inverter is the complement of its
input logic state, i.e., when input is high its output is low and vice versa.

3 TECHNICAL DETAILS:
The circuit of Advanced Quiz display is based on TTL ICs.
Transistor–transistor logic (TTL) is a class of digital circuits built from bipo-
lar junction transistors (BJTs) and resistors. It is called transistor–transistor
logicbecause transistors perform both the logic function .Many TTL logic gates
are typically fabricated onto a single integrated circuit (IC) and hence known
as TTL IC(s).
The push-to-on switches are connected to the inputs of IC1, IC74373, which
is an 8-bit latch. The output is connected to input of IC74147, IC2 which is
priority encoder. This is used here to convert the data latched on IC1 to BCD.
The output of IC2 is inverted by the inverters N1 to N4.This is achieved by
using IC 7404,which consists of 6 two input NOT gates. The complemented
outputs from inverters are fed to input of IC3, IC 7447 which is a BCD to 7-
segment display decoder. The outputs from the circuit advanced quiz display
drive a common-anode, 7-segment display through current limiting resistor R10
to R16. IC4,IC 7430 which is a 8 input NAND gate, is used to prevent the
latches from registering more than one team’s input. This happen because
whenever any one of the switches is pressed, the output of IC4 goes high. The
complement of this input is fed to the enable input of IC1, disabling the latches
until the reset switch is pressed.
The circuit of advanced quiz display with seven segment display is powered
by a 5 volt power supply.
The value of current limiting resistors (R10 – R16) would be increased or
decreased in order to increase or decrease the brightness of 7 segment display.

4 CURRENT STATUS OF DEVELOPMENT:

• Circuit design is completed.

• Construction of the circuit has been started.

5 MARKET POTENTIAL AND COMPETI-

TIVE ADVANTAGE:
This advanced quiz system is not only limited to use for conducting quizzes, whit
slight changes in the circuit it can be have many advantages and can be applied
to many real life situations like,

• In hospitals already there are various buzzer system technologies available

, but we can use this seven segment indication system with some changes as
an alternative of all the buzzer system available as this is more economical
and cost effective. We can place the switches in patient’s room and when
the patient press the switch, their room or bed number will be displayed
on the screen at the reception or the serving unit.

• This system can also be used in restaurants . Costumers can place their
order by pressing switches and their table number will be displayed at
the screen on the counter. By this management becomes very easy and
efficient.

In term of competitive advantage it is very economical in terms of costing.

By this government schools and independent quizzing organizations can easily
conduct quiz . We can also release this in markets for implementing small scale
projects.

6 Conclusion
This is a feasible project that will be useful for all kind of quizzing platforms.
