Portable Mini Wooden Lathe
PROBLEM:

A lathe is a tool that rotates the work piece about an axis of rotation to perform various
operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning,
with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object with symmetry about
that axis. But there are some drawbacks of conventional lathes. One problem with
conventional lathes is that they are quite heavy and bulky so they cannot be moved
easily from one place to another and are usually placed at a fix position in the workshop.
Also, quite a large initial investment is required to set up a unit of lathe which is not
possible for everyone. Besides, conventional lathes occupy a large space and also
require periodic maintenance which can be inconvenient at times.

OBJECTIVE/SOLUTION:

The main objective of this project is to create a light weight portable mini wooden lathe
having simple constructional parts which favors less effort to operate and will be used
for machining of materials. The portable mini wooden lathe will also be better than
conventional lathes in terms of portability, cost and effectiveness (especially when
machining of very small wooden parts).

METHODOLOGY:

The main parts that will be incorporating the portable mini wooden will be as follows:

• Headstock (Hand Drill or DC motor)

• Wooden Bed
• Headstock carrier
• Wooden Tailstock

Portable mini wooden lathe will use a DC motor as headstock which will be driven by 30-
40 V source and will be fixed to the Headstock carrier using clamps. The headstock is the
most important part of the lathe which is used to turn the object. The tailstock will be a
combination of wooden block which will have a dead centre made up of aluminum or
steel so that the wood piece to be turned can be fixed between the headstock and the
tailstock. The mini lathe will use a wooden bed which will reduce the weight as
compared to a metal. There will be a slot provided in the wooden bed for the to and fro
motion of the tailstock so that it can be adjusted according to the length of the object
which is to be machined and turned. This is the main procedure of making the portable
mini wooden lathe.
