Carriage way – 2 Lane

Foot Paths – 1m on Either side

Clear span – 6 m

Wearing Coat – 80mm

Width of bearing – 400mm

Material – M25 grade of concrete and Fe415 bars

Design the Reinforce Slab deck and sketch the details of reinforcement
of the slab. The design should conform to IRC: 6-2014 and IRC: 112-
2011
1. GIVEN DATA:

Clear Span = 6 m
Width of Bearing = 400mm
Carriage Way width = 7.5 m for two lanes
Loading : Class AA

2. MATERIAL PROPERTIES:

Fck = 25 N/mm2

Fyk = 415 N/mm2

Ec = 30 GPa

Es = 200 GPa
3. DEPTH OF THE SLAB AND EFFECTIVE SPAN:

Depth of slab
1) Based on the serviceability
D = L/12 to L/15 = 500mm to 400mm
2) Based on highway solid slab span
80mm/ meter of span
D = 80 x 6 = 480mm
Based on above considerations,
Adopt Depth of slab is D = 500mm
3. DEPTH OF THE SLAB AND EFFECTIVE SPAN:

Effective span
Using 20mm dia bars of HYSD and clear cover of 40mm
Effective Depth = 500 – 40 – 20/2 = 450mm
1) Clear span + Effective Depth
= 6 + 0.45 = 6.45 m
2) Clear span + Width of Bearing
= 6 + 0.40 = 6.40 m
Based on above considerations,
Adopt Effective span is L = 6.4m

4. Dead Load:

Self weight of the Slab = 24 x 0.5 = 12 KN/m2

Self weight of the Wearing coat = 22 x 0.08 = 1.76 KN/m2
Total Dead load = 13.76 KN/m2 == 14 KN/m2

5. Live Load:

For Class AA Loading Load is 700 KN

Impact factor = 19.7% (25% for 5 m and 10% for 9 m use interpolation)
Total Load with Impact Factor is = 700 x 1.197 = 838 KN
6. Bending Moment

Effective Length of Dispertion Lef = L1 + 2(D + tw)

= 3.6 + 2(0.5 + 0.08) = 4.76 m

Effective width of Dispertion Bef = B1 + α X (1- X/L)

= (0.85 + 2 x 0.08) + 2.48 x 3.2(1-3.2/6.4)
= 5.56 m

Net Effective width of Dispersion = 2.625 + 2.05 + 2.78 = 7.455 m

Intensity of the Live Load = 838 / (7.455 x 4.76) = 23.61 KN/m2

Bending Moment Due to Live Load = ((23.61 x 4.76/2) x 3.2) – (23.61 x 4.76/2) x 4.76/4
= 113 KN-m

13.76 KN/m2

Bending Moment Due to Dead Load = 14 x 6.4 x 6.4 / 8

= 72 KN-m
Total Design Ultimate Moment = 1.35 x 72 + 1.5 x 113 = 267 KN-m per meter width
6. Shear Force

Effective Length of Dispersion Lef = L1 + 2(D + tw)

= 3.6 + 2(0.5 + 0.08) = 4.76 m

Effective width of Dispersion Bef = B1 + α X (1- X/L)

= (0.85 + 2 x 0.08) + 2.48 x 2.38(1-2.38/6.4)
= 5.256 m
4.76 23.61 KN/m2

2.38
6.4

Net Effective width of Dispersion = 2.625 + 2.05 + 5.256/2 = 7.303 m

Intensity of the Live Load = 838 / (7.303 x 4.76) = 24.1 KN/m2
Shear Force for Live Load = (24.1 x 4.76 x (6.4-2.38))/6.4 = 72 KN
13.76 KN/m2

6.4

Shear Force for Dead Load = 14 x 6.4 /2 = 45 KN

Total Design Ultimate Shear Force = 1.35 x Vd + 1.5 x VL

= 1.35 x 45 + 1.5 x 72 = 169 KN per meter width

7. Design of Deck Slab:
Limiting Moment of resistance for Singly Reinforced Section is

Mu = 0.138fckbd2
267 x 106 = 0.138 x 25 x 1000 x d2
d = 278 mm < Adopted effective depth 450mm
Hence the Section is Under Reinforced

Main Reinforcement:
Mu = 0.87fyAstd(1-fyAst/fckbd)
Ast = 1758 mm2
Using 20 mm diameter bars main reinforcement, spacing is given by
S = 1000ast/Ast
= 178.6 mm
Provide 20 mm dia bars at 150 mm center to center.
Ast provided = 2094 mm2

Distribution Reinforcement:
Transverse Moment = 0.2 x MuD + 0.3 MuL
= 0.2 x 1.35 x 72 + 0.3 x 1.5 x 113
= 71 KN-m
Provide 12 mm dia bars at spacing of 200 mm center to center
Check for Ultimate Bending Strength:

Mu= 0.87fyAstd(1-fyAst/bdfck)
= 314 x 106 N-mm
= 314 KN-m > 267 KN.m (Hence safe)

Check for Ultimate shear strength:

Vu = 0.12 K [ (80ρ1fck)0.33) ] b d
K = 1 + sqrt(200/d) = 1.66
ρ1 = (Ast/b d) = 0.0046
Vu = 0.12 x 1.66 [( 80 x 0.0046 x 25)0.33 ] (1000 x 450)
= 188 x 103 N
=- 188 KN >169 KN (Hence safe)
Check for Serviceability Limit states
a) Limit state of Craking
crack width computation
control of crack width
b) Limit state of Deflection
deflection due to shrinkage
deflection due to dead load
Deflection due to live load
