DECILES

• Deciles are number values of the

variable that divide a set of ranked data
into 10 equal parts. Each set of data has
9 deciles
Measures of Position for
Ungrouped Data
Steps in solving for Quantile Measures
1. Arrange the data in ascending or descending
order
2. Solve for the location of the given quantile.
Using the formula for location.

Where:
p = desired percentage
n = number of scores
q = quantile (4 , 10, 100)
Example: Given Data.
26, 51, 44, 23, 25, 61, 45, 65, 23, 43, 41, 55, 34, 35
Arranged Data:
23, 23, 25, 26, 34, 35, 41, 43, 44, 45, 51, 55, 61, 65

3. Locate the score corresponding to the

obtained location in the distribution
Therefore, D4 is equal to the 6th score in the ranked
data.
D4= 35
4. If the obtained location is not exact,
Interpolate.
Arranged Data:
23, 23, 25, 26, 34, 35, 41, 43, 44, 45, 51, 55, 61, 65
Computing D7

Since the location is 10.50, which is not exact, interpolate:

10.5 lies between the 10th and 11th score,
1. Subtract 10th score to 11th score
=51-45= 6
2. Multiply the decimal point to the obtained answer, 6
6(.50) = 3
3. Add the answer from step no. 2 to the 10th score.
D7 = 45 + 3 = 48

Therefore, D7 = 48
Quantiles for Grouped Data
Use the formula

l= Lower Boundary where quantile lies

c or I or w = Class size or class interval
k = decile location
n = sample size or total number of class
q = quantile
cfb= cumulative frequency before the quantile class
f = frequency of the quantile class

35-39 9 26 34.5 Thus 65% of the scores are less than

40-44 6 32 39.5
36.2 or

45-49 3 35 44.5

50-54 5 40 49.5
