Thermodynamics
What is the thermodynamics ?
 Thermodynamics is the scientific study
of the relationships between heat and
other forms of energy.
 Energy transformers-mostly involve heat
and work movement.
 The Fundamental law is the conservation
of energy principle:
“Energy cannot be created or destroyed,
but can only be transformed from one to
other” Change in Heat added Work done by
internal energy to the the system

Thermodynamics
System, surroundings and boundary
• System: A quantity of matter or a region in space
chosen for study.
• Surroundings: The mass or region outside the
system
• Boundary: The real or imaginary surface that
separates the system from its surroundings.

Type of system

• Closed
• isolated

6
Thermodynamics
Types of system
• Closed system - only energy can cross the selected boundary
• Opened system - both mass and energy can cross the selected
boundary
• Isolated system - neither mass nor energy can cross the selected
boundary

7
Thermodynamics
Properties of a system
• Properties of a system is a measurable characteristic of a system that is in
equilibrium.

(Are independent of the amount of mass)

(Varies directly with the mass)

8
Thermodynamics
State, Equilibrium, and Process

State – a set of properties that describes

the conditions of a system. Eg. Mass m,
Temperature T, volume V
Thermodynamic equilibrium - system
that maintains thermal, mechanical,
phase and chemical equilibriums.

9
Thermodynamics
Process – change from one equilibrium state to another
• isobaric P constant
• isothermal T constant
• isochoric V constant
• isentropic S constant
