A Study on

ENERGY CONSUMPTION
In
HIGH-SPEED TRAINS and MAGLEV
MAGLEV
High Speed Rail (or) Bullet Train :

High Speed Rail (or) Bullet Train is a type of rail

transport significantly faster than traditional rail
traffic, using an integrated system of specialized
Electric Traction, Rolling stock and dedicated tracks.
MAGLEV
What is meant by Maglev ?

MAGLEV = MAGNETIC + LEVITATION

Any thing which may levitate (raise or float) by

means of Magnetic power is simply called as
Magnetic Leviation.
MAGLEV
Basic Principle of Maglev Trains:

Maglev Trains have to perform the following functions to

operate in High Speeds

a) Levitation
b) Propulsion
c) Lateral
Introduction
a) Energy consumption is an important
criterion of the operating costs when
comparing the operational features of
modern High-Speed railway (HSR) systems
for long-distance services.

b) This PPT presents and compares the

energy consumption of selected HSR
systems based either on magnetic levitation
and long stator motor technology (Maglev
systems) or on wheel-on-rail technology
(R/S systems).
Objective
a) The Main Ojective of this PPT is How much energy is
consumed differentiated by speed which is required
for a train with a normalized effective area, when it is
driven by a certain

(i) High-Speed railway system,

(ii) R/S system (TGV, ICE, Shinkansen)
(iii)Maglev (Transrapid, Chuo-Maglev)

b) In the past, energy values of systems with different

conditions (train configuration,
dimension, capacity, maximum speed) were
frequently compared. The comparative values were
often represented by the specific energy consumption
based on passenger capacity and line-kilometer
values.
Selected of Railway Systems to
Evaluate Energy Consumption
Wheel-Rail systems:

a) ICE 3 (Germany)
b) TGV Duplex Dasye (France)
c) Shinkansen N 700 (Japan)

MAGLEV systems

d) Transrapid 08 (Germany/China; electromagnetic

system - supporting and guiding systems based on
attraction – coupled with longstator linear motor)
e) Chuo Shinkansen Maglev L0 (Japan; differential flow
system for support, guidance and propulsion with 8-
shaped coils in the track side walls and
superconducting magnets in the vehicle)
Basics of Energy Consumption
Calculations
In principle, the specific energy consumption values for a railway
system depend on the technical system design, the maximum
speed, and the train configuration for the different application
cases.

The main reasons for the energy consumption values which are to
some extent quite different include:

a) The different line characteristics, topography,

b) The considered clearance,
c) The different train configurations of the railway systems being
considered,
d) Specific operator requirements in terms of fittings (number of
seats and comfort), aisle width, luggage storage space and
restaurant service, and therefore the maximum total seating
capacity,
e) The design of the traction system and power supply, particularly in
the Maglev systems,
f) The different vehicle lengths (which impact driving resistance,
vehicle weight),
g) The respective operational design speed, and
h) Number of stations and distance between stations.
