• As gonefrom left to right,a decrease,then
an icrease,is seen in the radius of
transition metals.
• On the one hand,increasing effective
nuclear charge tends to make atoms
smaller.
• On the other hand,the
strongest(and,therefore,shortest)metalic
bonds are found in the center of the
transition metals
• Periods 5 and 6 are about the same size
due to the lanthanide contraction-the
effect of 4f electrons on effective nuclear
charge
