PURPOSE

• To avoid dengerous zones.

• To follow proper Harbour
approach.
• To locate Harbour at night and bad
weather conditions.

IMPORTANCE OF NAVIGATION SYSTEM

• For safe, efficient

economic and
comfortable travel of
vessels in River,
Channel, Harbour along
shores, navigation aids
is necessary.

TOOLS
FOR
NAVIGATION

NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM FOR DOCKS & HARBOUR

1. BOUYS

• Buoys are used to enhance

safety by providing more
opportunities to obtain line of
position.
• Diffrent types are
available.They are designed
and constructed for maximum
visual range in relatively
shallow water and applications.

2. MARINE LANTERNS

• Designed for use as aids-to-

navigation in marinas, rivers,
harbors, and aquaculture.
• They are ideal for docks, piers,
jetties, marinas, offshore wind
farms.

2. MARINE LANTERNS

• To mark dredging
operations and for a host
of other applications where
hazard lighting is required.

3. AUDIBLE AIDS

• An audible signal intended

to warn or guide ships in
low visibility.
• Also called Fog Signal or
Sound Signal.

4. LEADING LIGHTS

• Long range signalling marine lantern.

• Use in guiding mariners to the center of a
navigable channel.
• Used to indicate a safe passage for vessels
entering a shallow or dangerous channel.
• Also be used for position fixing.
• Leading lights are often illuminated day and
night.

5. LIGHTHOUSE BEACONS

• A tower with a bright

light at the top.
• Located at an important
or dangerous place
regarding navigation.

5. LIGHTHOUSE BEACONS

• The two main

purposes of a lighthous
1. To serve as
a navigational aid.
2. To warn boats of
dangerous areas.

LATERAL MARKS
FOR
NAVIGATION
Lateral marks, as defined by the International Association of Lighthouse
Authorities, is a sea mark used in maritime pilotage to indicate the edge
of a channel.

GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
FOR
NAVIGATION

NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM FOR DOCKS & HARBOUR

GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

• GPS provides the fastest and most accurate method for mariners to navigate, measure speed,
and determine location.
• This enables increased levels of safety and efficiency for mariners worldwide.
• It is important in marine navigation for the ship's officer to know the vessel's position while in
open sea and also in congested harbors and waterways.
• The need for accurate position information becomes even more critical as the vessel departs
from or arrives in port.
• Vessel traffic and other waterway hazards make maneuvering more difficult, and the risk of
accidents becomes greater.
• Mariners and oceanographers are increasingly using GPS data for underwater surveying, buoy
placement, and navigational hazard location and mapping.
