INTRODUCTION
• The first military night-vision devices were introduced by
the German Army as early as 1939 and were used in World
War II.
• Night vision technology, literally helps the people to see in the
dark.
• After World War II, the first practical commercial night-
vision device was developed at Radio Corporation Of
America, intended for civilian use.
TYPE OF NIGHT VISION
DEVICES
• Image Enhancement
This works by collecting the tiny amount of light ,including
the lower portion of the infrared light spectrum, that are present but
may be interceptible to our eyes, and amplifying it to the point we can
easily observe the image.
• Thermal Imaging
This technology operates by capturing the upper portion of the
infrared light spectrum which is emitted as heat by objects instead of
simple reflected as light Hotter objects such as warm body emit more
of this light than cooler objects like trees or building.
HOW NIGHT VISION WORKS?
• A special lens focuses the infrared light emitted by all of the objects in view.
• The focused light is scanned by a infrared detector elements. The detector
elements create a very detailed temperature pattern called a theromogram.
• The thermogram created by the detector elements is translated into electric
impulses.
• The impulses are sent to a signal processing unit, for the display of data.

• Therefore it appears as various

colours depending on the
intensity of the infrared
emission.
• The combination of all the
impulses from all of the
elements create an image.
GENERATIONS
NIGHT VISION DEVICES
• SCOPES
It is generally mounted on a weapon.

• GOGGLES
They are binocular and mounted on a head.

• CAMERAS
Used for recording of images mostly if the
location is fixed.
APPLICATIONS
• MILITARY PURPOSES
• HUNTING
• WILDLIFE OBSERVATION
• SURVEILLANCE
• SECURITY
• NAVIGATION
• HIDDEN OBJECT DETECTION
CONCLUSION
• Night vision is used to locate an object which is 200
yards away even in a moonless, cloudy night.

• The original purpose of night vision is to locate the

enemy target at nights.

• It is mainly used in navigation, surveillance as well as

military purposes.
