Definition of Discourse Analysis According to Experts

• James Deese in his Thought into Speech: the Psychology of a

Language (1984: 72, as quoted by Sumarlam (2009: 6) states
that discourse is a set of interconnected propositions to
produce a sense of cohesion or a sense of cohesion for the
listener or reader. Cohesion itself must arise from the content
of the discourse, but a lot of cohesion felt by the listener or
the reader must emerge from the way of speaking, that is
speaking of the discourse.
• Mc Carthy (1993) Discourse analysis is the study of the
relationship between language and the context of the wearer.
• Henry Guntur Tarigan (1987: 27) argues that discourse is the
most complete language unit, higher than clauses and
sentences, has good cohesion and coherence, has clear,
continuous beginnings and endings, and can be delivered
verbally or in writing .
The Meaning of Discourse Analysis
Discourse analysis is a science that has only emerged in recent
years, before linguistic schools only limited its analysis to social
sentences, but only recently did linguists turn their attention to
analyzing discourse. Discourse analysis is the study of the
structure of messages in a communication or study of various
functions (pragmatics) of language. Through discourse analysis,
we not only know the message to be conveyed, why it should be
delivered, and how the messages are arranged and understood.
The object of study or discourse analysis research is generally
centered on the language used daily, both in the form of text or
oral.
The Meaning of Discourse Analysis
Discourse is the most complete language unit above the
sentence and the highest grammatical unit in grammatical. As
the most complete grammatical unit, discourse has concepts,
ideas, thoughts, or ideas that can be understood by readers
and listeners. As the highest grammatical unit, discourse is
formed from sentences that meet grammatical requirements
and other requirements for discourse.
Discourse analysis is a study of various (pragmatic) functions
of language. We use language in continuity or string of
discourse. Without context, without intercourse relations and
supracalimat discourse, it is difficult for us to properly educate
each other.
