SOCIAL STRATIFICATION

Social stratification refers to the ranking of


members of a society in groups on the basis
of their status.
• This ranking may be on the basis of
occupation, power, economic resources,
prestige, caste, education.
DETERMINANTS OF SOCIAL
STRATIFICATION
 Power – The degree to which a person can
control other people. More power more
respect in society.
 Economic resources – The level of income
from all resources is an important indicator
of one’s place in society.
 Prestige – The degree of respect, favorable
regard or importance accorded to an
individual by members of society
DETERMINANTS OF SOCIAL
STRATIFICATION
Occupation – High class professionals
include big businessmen, industrialists,
landlords and high class government and
semi-government officials.
Caste – It is permanent, having its status
ascribed as birth. Some castes are believed
to be higher in status while others as low.
Education – The standard of education also
determines a social class.

SOCIAL DIFFERENCES
 The differences among the individual on the
basis of social characteristics and qualities
are known as social differences.
 . They include class, race, culture, ability,
sex etc
 Example, in a society individual with high
status are given more respect and
importance as compared to poor and
homeless people hence it’s a social
differences.
VALUE OF HIGH STATUS
 The rich in the pakistan also have the right
to do what ever they want, on the other
hand when a poor commits a mistake receive
sever punishment.
GENDER
 Gender is another class differences. Women
do not have the same freedom and right as
men. Women do not receive career and
health opporptunities and health care as
men.
EDUCATION
 Education system in pakistan is one of the
major reasons of social differences.
 Example. The children of rich families study
in private school. A lower class child can not
go to upper class school due to because they
did not afford it.
CLASS DIFFERENCES
 A group of people having similar status.
 Class difference also exist in pakistan.
 Three social classes exist in pakistan ;

1. Upper class
2. Middle class
3. Lower class
LANGUAGE
 Language is a system of communication
through which we can share our feeling,
ideas by the use of sign, sound, gestures, etc
Example:
English, Urdu, Punjapi, Sindhi, Pashtu etc

 Group of people have similar status.
 A social class is a homogeneous group of
people in a society formed on the combined
basis of:
1. Education
2. Occupation
3. Income
4. Place of residence
 
 SOCIAL CLASSES IN PAKISTAN
There are three basic social classes in pakistan:

1. Upper social class


2. Middle social class
3. Lower social class
SOCIAL CLASSES IN PAKISTAN
1. Upper social class:
 They have high level of income and belong to be
most high paying profession.
They include:
a. Top management of the company
b. Big businessmen
c. High status leadership
This class is divided into two groups.
1. UPPER SOCIAL CLASS
 This class is divided into two groups.
a. The upper upper class
b. The lower upper class
a. The upper upper class:
It includes aristocratic and high society families
with old money, who have been rich from
generation to generation.
b. The lower upper class
This class includes those with new money or they
made money from investment, business.
2. MIDDLE SOCIAL CLASS
 The middle class is the sandwich class. They
have more money than those below them on
the social ladder, but less than those above
them.
 This class is divided into two groups:

a. The upper middle class


b. The lower middle class
a. The upper middle class:
This class is made up of highly educated
business and professional people with high income
such as doctors, lawyers etc
b. The lower middle class
This class is made up of people with low money
such as small business owner, managers, teachers,
secretaries etc
3. THE LOWER SOCIAL CLASS
 They are either unemployed, or get
employment for short term basis.

 This class is divided into two groups:


a. The upper lower class
b. The lower lower class
a. The upper lower class
They are engage in manual labour. They are
skilled worker. They are dishwasher,
carpenters, plumbers, electrician, maid etc.
b. The lower lower class
They are unskilled, unemployed and
homeless people.
TYPE OF SOCIAL STATUS
  Social status show the position of individual
in the society.
1. Ascribed Status - The social class position
allocated to an individual by society as a
result of factors over which the individual
has no control.
2. Achieved Status - The social class position
which an individual acquires as a result of
his/her own activities.
