    Henri Matisse was a French artist born in 1869 who worked in drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and painting. He is best known as a painter but also pioneered a technique called "painting with scissors" where he used cut paper collages. During his later years as he became confined to a wheelchair, Matisse created many of his most famous works through this cut paper technique by arranging shapes cut from paper on the walls of his studio.

    After he could no longer stand for


    extended periods of time, Matisse
    began creating works using a pair of
    scissors and paper. He used a long
    stick to assemble them on his walls
    until he was happy with the
    arrangement. He called this
    technique ‘painting with scissors’
