Reliability Evaluation Models

Dynamic
Parallel
Static Models
• This type of evaluation is usually a form of preliminary analysis.
• In this type of models, the reliability of system components is assumed constant without
considering the time.
• The components’ probability of failure does not vary with time and
components/units/subsystems fail independently.
Series Model
• This is the simplest of all reliability networks. Each block in the figure below represents a
unit/component.

• If any one of the units fails, the system fails, all units must operate normally for the system’s
success.
Static Series Model

• The
reliability of series systems network can be expressed by

Where,
series system reliability or probability of success
event denoting the success of unit i, for i = 1, 2, 3, …

If units fail independently, equation becomes

Or

• Where is the unit I reliability, for I = 1, 2, 3, … n.

Example
••  Assume that a car has four identical tires. The tire reliability is 0.97. If
any one of the tires is punctured, the car cannot be driven. Calculate
the system reliability with respect to tires. Comment on the end
result.
• By substituting the given data into equation, we get

• If , system reliability can be approximated as

Parallel Network
• It
represents a system with m units operating
simultaneously.
• At least one unit must operate normally for the system
success.

• The failure probability of the parallel system is given by

Where,
failure probability of parallel system
event denoting the failure of unit I
•If  units fail independently, equation becomes

Or

• Where is the unit failure probability, for I = 1, 2, 3, … m.

• We know that

If R is component reliability
