Theorem of parallel axis

It states that if this moment of inertia of a plane area about an axis in the
plane of area through the C.G of the plane area be represented by IG, then
the distance between plane area and AB is h. C.G of the area is given by,

I AB  I G  Ah 2
Here, I AB  Moment of inertia of the given area about AB
I G  Moment of inertia of the given area about C.G
A  Area of plane sec tion
• X-X= The axis in the plane of area A and passing through the C.G of the
area
• h= Distance between the AB and X-X axis
• AB= The axis in the plane of area A and parallel to the X-X axis

• Consider a strip parallel to X-X axis at a distance y from the X-X axis.

Moment of inertia of a triangular section about its base.

Soln: Here,
ABC is a triangular section and b=base width ,height=h
Consider a small strip of thickness at a distance y from the vertex A.
Area of the strip =DE.dy………………..(1)
The distance DE in terms of y, b and h is obtained from two similar
triangles ADE and ABC as

Substituting the value of DE in equation (1)
Area of strip  by dy
