TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS

OBJECTIVES:

 After the students have gone through the lessons, they are
expected to:

 1. Illustrate the six trigonometric ratios;

 2. Apply trigonometric ratios to solve the right triangle
given;
 a. The length of two sides
 b. The length of one side and one acute angles
The trig functions can be summarized using the
following mnemonic device:

TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION KEYS

sin csc = 1/sin sin-1

tan

cot = 1/tan tan-1

PRACTICE:

1. sin 40o =
2. cos 25o =
3. tan 68o =

1. sin-1 .643 =
2. cos-1 .906 =
3. tan-1 2.475 =
1. sin 40o = .643
2. cos 25o = .906
3. tan 68o = 2.475

1. sin-1 .643 = 40o

2. cos-1 .906 = 25o
3. tan-1 2.475 = 68o
Remember:
Draw a Picture
When solving math problems, it can be
very helpful to draw a picture of the
situation if not all are given.
Example:
A 14 m. building cast a shadow of 18 m. Find the angle that
make up the sun above the horizon.

By Pythagorean Theorem:

c  a 2  b2

Find the six trigonometric ratios:

Sinx = o/h
= 12/21.63 cosx = a/h tanx = a/h cscx = h/o secx = h/a cotx = a/o
= .555 = 21.63/12 = 21.63/18 = 18/12
= 18/21.63 = 12/18
= .832 = .667 = 1.8 = 1.2 = 1.5
 Sinx = .555
 x = .555/sin
 x = sin-1(.555)
 x = 33.70

 Find the value of angle x using the cos and tangent function.
