DOMESTIC WIRING

What are domestic wires?

Electrical wiring to provide power for domestic
devices.
Service mains
Conductors that bring
electrical energy from the
nearest pole carrying the
secondary distribution
system
to the consumer’s
premises
Types of service mains
Overhead cable service mains

Underground cable service mains

Wiring system-Conduit Wiring
In this system PVC or VIR cables are run
through metallic or PVC pipes, providing
good protection against mechanical
injury and fire due to short circuit.

Fuse
A fuse is the simplest device used in an
electrical circuit to protect against overloading
or fire hazards due to short-circuits.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
FUSE MATERIAL

* Low melting point
* Low Ohmic losses
* High conductivity
*Lower rate of deterioration
Ratings of Fusing Element

* Rated Current
* Fusing Current
* Fusing factor

Mini-Circuit Breaker (MCB)
Mini-Circuit Breaker (MCB)
Advantages
• Compact device
• Easy installation and operation
• Does not melt (unlike a fuse)
• Safer than fuse
• MCBs are available for different ratings.

Disadvantages
Not Economical . MCB is nearly 5 times
costlier than a fuse.
Electric shock
When an animal or human body comes in contact
with any source of voltage high enough to cause
sufficient current to flow through the body an
electric shock occurs.
When a person comes in contact with live wires
of the electric supply , he gets a Shock.

Mild shock produce nervousness.

Severe shocks may lead to unconsciousness

And death..
Prevention of shock
 Make sure that all metallic parts of the
electrical equipments are effectively earthed.
Use a ‘line tester’ to check if a terminal is live, Still better is to use a ‘test lamp’, as the
line tester can show a glow even with a small voltage.
Before replacing a broken switch , plug or blown fuse, always switch off the main
supply.
Use rubber-sole shoes while repairing/testing electrical equipments.
If this is not possible,
use some dry-wooden support under your feet,
so that your body has no direct contact with earth..
..

Always use well insulated tools (such as

screw-drivers , pliers , cutters , etc..)
Never touch two different terminals at the
same time.
Use correct rating of fuse wire..
While working on electric pole or tower ,
use safety-belt and a rubber padded
ladder.
EARTHING
An electrical equipment is said to be
earthed if its outer frame and its outer
parts not carrying any current are
connected to earth so as to attain zero
potential.
1.Plate earthing:
Copper or G.I plate are buried.(3m)
It is kept face vertical.
It is embedded in alternate layers of coal and salt.
Wire is bolted to the earth plate with the help of bolt nut and
washer.
To maintain good conductivity an arrangement is made for
pouring water into earth pit surrounding the electrode
Pipe earthing
G.I pipe is buried.(60cm)

It is embedded in alternate
layers of
coal and salt.
RCCB
RESIDUAL CURRENT CIRCUIT
BREAKER
Why do we really
need an RCCB?
* RCCBs are designed to
disconnect the circuit if there is a
leakage current( 5–30
miliamperes)

* prevents electrocution.
How do they work?

RCCBs operate by measuring the

current balance between two
conductors using a differential
current transformer.
Why RCCB’s over fuses or Conventional
circuit breaker?

By contrast, conventional
circuit breakers or fuses
only break the circuit when
the total current is excessive
which may be thousands of
times the leakage current an
RCCB responds to.
