What is Coal?

Flammable sedimentary rocks, formed

from organic deposits, are mainly
plant residues and are formed through
the process of forming coal
History of Coal
The pre-historic ●
Flint working sites are found to be adjacent to

Late 2nd century

The Romans exploited most of Britain's coalfields

Coal was used in hypocausts to heat public baths
AD and even for heating of wealthy villas.

After the collapse of

the UK – 12th ●
the coal market was not recorded again
century

In the 12th ●
produced more pig iron in just one region
century than the whole of Britain
The 13th ●
the trading of coal was increased
century across Britain

The 14th ●
coal began to be used in the UK for domestic
heating in local to production areas
century

The 16th ●
supplies of wood began to fall in Britain and the
use of coal as a fuel rapidly expanded
century replacement.

The 17th ●

coal mining technology had advanced significantly
the annual output of coal from Britain was just
century under 3 million tonnes
The 18th surface and near surface deposits of coal had been

exhausted and deep shaft mining began to develop.

century
The 19th General Electric company built the first alternating

current power plant for Pennsylvania in US

century

1970s ●
Coal use in the US has dropped

Today China is the world’s leading

producer and consumer of coal

The process of forming Coal
Peat – Stage One
Peat is the first stage in the formation of coal.
Normally, vegetable matter is oxidized to water
and carbon dioxide.
Lignite – Stage Two
Lignite, the second stage, is formed when peat is
subjected to increased vertical pressure from
accumulating sediments.
Bituminous Coal – Stage Three
Also known as “soft coal”, bituminous coal is the
type found in Cape Breton and is our most
abundant fuel. It is greatly used in industry as a
source of heat energy.
Anthracite – Stage Four
is also known as “hard coal” because it is hard and
has a high lustre. It appears to have been formed as
a result of combined pressure and high
temperature. Anthracite burns with a short flame
and little smoke.
