Acrylic denture

base porosities

Porosity
 Presence of surface and subsurface voids that compromise the
> physical
> esthetics
> hygenic properties of the processed denture base
Porosities can be either

 Internal porosities: with in the acrylic denture base

 External porosities: on the surface of the acrylic denture base

Types of porosities

 Contraction porosities
 Gaseous porosities
 Granular porosities
Compression porosity

 Seen throughout the area of the denture

 Contraction may result in the distortion of shape of the denture

 Cause:
- when dough is packed into the mould, sufficient pressure should be applied
- if the pressure applied is less, can lead to the porosity voids(monomer
ontracts by 20% of its volume during polymerization)

 Prevention: proper trial packing should be done

Gaseous porosity

 Seen in the localized area of the denture, (round and is sharply defined)

 Cause: vaporization of monomer causing the porous defects

 If the temperature is raised before the polymerization process

 Prevention:
-heat cure acrylic denture base should be polymerized under low temperature
about (74 degree Celsius for three hours and 100 degree Celsius for one hour and
under pressure
Granular porosities

 Seen in the thin areas of the denture

 White and frosty appearance is seen

 Cause: incorrect monomer polymer ratio

and failing to pack the flask at the dough stage

Prevention: by using proper monomer polymer ratio
