Sex and Gender
are not the same
What is sex?

It refers to the natural distinguishing


variable based on biological
characteristics of being a woman or a
man.
GENDER

- refers to socially determined ideas and


practices of what it is to be female or male.
- refers to roles, attitudes and values assigned by
culture and society to women and men.

GENDER SENSITIVITY

The awareness and insight into the state of the


other sex, with reference to historical
roots of sexist stereotyping, discrimination and
violence.
GENDER SENSITIVITY TRAINING

Gender sensitivity is an integral part of decision maki
ng in industrialized countries where there is
a growing number of female headed
households, especially in the urban setting.

A problem that arises from your being a man or a
woman that hinders the attainment of a full and
satisfying life.

SEX ROLES
SEX ROLE

- is a function or role which a male or female


assumes because of the basic physiological or
anatomical differences between the sexes. It is a
biologically determined role which can be performed
by only one of the sexes.

•gestation which determines
child’s sex

*These roles are not exchangeable because they are


biologically determined.
COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT ROLE

Are activities undertaken at the community


level to contribute to the development or
political organization of the community. It is
voluntary, unpaid work.
ROLE AND STATUS OF FILIPINA
Woman's traditional role, especially if she is a
wife and mother, is to stay home, manage
the household and take care of the family.
ROLE AND STATUS OF FILIPINA
Men relegated household tasks to
women. Employed women carry double burden.
GENDER DISCRIMINATION
Sexism - prejudice or discrimination on the
 grounds of sex, especially against women.

Attitude or mindset which “justifies” 
men control over women,
headship for the man and
subordination for women and
such attitude often justifies
discrimination and violence
against women.
DISCRIMINATION

Overt behaviour in which people are given


different and unfavourable treatment on the
basis of their race, class, sex, and cultural
status.
DOUBLE/ MULTIPLE BURDEN

A situation referring to the heavy workload of


women and the many, overlapping tasks
involved, which if computed in terms of hours
would total more than 24 hours.
GENDER AWARENESS

Defines as a high level of


gender conscientization.
GENDER EQUALITY VS GENDER EQUITY

Gender equality means that women and men


enjoy the same status and conditions and have equal
opportunity for realizing their potential to contribute
to the political, economic, social and cultural
development of their countries.
GENDER EQUALITY VS GENDER EQUITY

Gender equity moves beyond a focus on equal


treatment. It means giving to those who have less on
the basis of needs, and taking steps to compensate
for historical and social disadvantages that prevent
women and men from otherwise operating on a level
playing field.
GENDER EQUALITY VS GENDER EQUITY

Equity can be understood as the means,


and equality is the end.
Equity leads to equality.
GENDER-FAIR SOCIETY

A society where women and men share equally


in responsibilities, power, authority and decision
making.

 
GENDER GAP

The gap between women and men in terms of


how they benefit from education, employment,
services.
 
GENDER IDEOLOGY

Two distinct purposes:

a) to justify the existing social order;


b) to co-opt and obtain the consent and participation
of all members of society.
 
GENDER ROLES VS SEX ROLES

Gender roles are culturally defined attitudes,


behaviours and social positions that are based on
sex.

Sex roles are those that are based on an


occupation, such as being a housewife, or a
biological function, such as motherhood.
GENDER STEREOTYPING

- society's perceptions and value systems


that instil an image of women.

- are simplistic generalizations about the


gender attributes, differences, and roles of
individuals and/or groups.
FEMININE MASCULINE
Females are thought to be: Males are thought to be:

• passive • aggressive
• fickle-minded • focused
• dependent • independent
• gentle • rough
• tactful • direct
TRADITIONAL FEMALE STEREOTYPE ROLE

- is to marry and have children.

- is also to put her family’s welfare before her own;


be loving, compassionate, caring, nurturing and
sympathetic; and find time to be sexy and feel
beautiful.
THE MALE STEREOTYPE ROLE

- is to be a financial provider.

- is also to be assertive, competitive,


independent, courageous, and career-focused;
hold his emotions in check; and always initiate sex.
At the societal level, gender stereotypes can have
negative or positive effects when used as standards
by which to evaluate others.

Stereotypes can be destructive because they limit our


potential.

Stereotypes attributed to women have generally led


to prejudice and discrimination against women.
GENDER SUBORDINATION

Due to force or violence, or being under the


authority of one sex. It often results in women
having no control over available resources and
having no personal autonomy.
MARGINALIZATION

Women being considered a nonessential


force in the economy despite their crucial role
in production.
MULTIPLE ROLES OF WOMEN

The reproductive, productive, community


management and constituency-based politics
roles assigned to women.
PATRIARCHY

The "rule of the father," or a universal


political structure that favours men over
women.
SEXISM

The system and practice of discriminating


against a person on the basis of sex.
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Any act of gender-based violence that


results in physical, sexual or psychological
harm or suffering to women, including
threats of such acts, coercion, or arbitrary
deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in
public or private life.
