What is Geography

The word geography can be broken into the two basic elements of "GEO" and
"GRAPHY." Geo comes from the Greek word which means “The Earth” The
“Graphy" part comes from the Greek word Graphein, which is literally to write
about something.
The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of
human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution
of populations and resources and political and economic activities.
Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there,
and how they develop and change over time.
 Branches of Geography
Human Geography
Human geography is the
branch of geography that
deals with the study of people
and their communities,
cultures, economies, and
interactions with the
environment by studying their
relations with and across
space and place. Human
geography attends to human
patterns of social interaction,
as well as spatial level
interdependencies, and how
they influence or affect the
earth's environment.
Physical Geography
Physical geography is one of
the two major fields of
geography. Physical geography
concerned with natural
features and phenomena of
the earth's surface, as
landforms, drainage features,
climates, soils, vegetation and
deals with processes and
patterns in the natural
environment such as
the atmosphere, biosphere,
and geosphere.

Geographers under this branch
normally study the manner in which
products are usually produced and
consequently distributed in their
respective niche markets. In addition to
this, they also study the way in which
wealth is distributed in various regions

where water meets land. Coastal
weathering, or the impact of the ocean
on these coastal environments,
involves very unique processes.
Environmental Geography
Environmental geography focuses on
studying the interactions and impacts
between humans and the natural
world.
Hydrology
The study of hydraulics concerns the
amount of quality of water and its
movement across the Earth’s surfaces.
Orology
Orology is the study of mountains and
their formation.
Soil Geography
This field deals with the makeup of soil
as well as soil classification and how
soil relates to geomorphology and
climate.
