Importance of Geography to Human
Life
Geography helps us to explore and understand space
and place - recognizing the great differences in cultures,
political systems, economies, landscapes and environments
across the world, and exploring the links between them.

Geography enables people to understand where they

are in relation to other places or objects. Landmark or
feature recognition is part of this geographic understanding,
as is an awareness of the built environment generally - as in
knowing street network structures or being able to identify
surrounding land use
History of Geography

Geography was first systematically

studied by the ancient Greeks, who
also developed a philosophy of
geography; Thales of Miletus,
Herodotus, Eratosthenes, Aristotle,
Strabo, and Ptolemy made major
contributions to
geography.

The first recorded use of the word geography was
by Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar who lived from
276–194 BCE who is credited with creating the
discipline of geography (Eratosthenes' Geography.)

Nature & Scope
Human geography studies the inter-relationship
between the physical environment and socio- cultural
environment created by human beings through
mutual interaction with each other.
It is concerned with the study of the size,
shape and movement of the earth and other
heavenly bodies, landmass, bodies of water,
climate, vegetation and events in different
places of the world. It also deals with the
spatial distribution of animal and natural
resources as well as human activities.

Branch of geography that deals with human governments,

the boundaries and subdivisions of political units (as nations
or states), and the situations of cities — compare geopolitics.
Population Geography

A division of human geography that focuses on the

study of people, their spatial distributions, their
characteristics, and their density.
Transportation Geography
Transportation geography examines flows of
people, goods, and information as well as their
relationships with the urban, economic, social,
political, and cultural aspects of human society.
Urban Geography
Urban geography is concerned with the relations
among people, and between people and their
environments, in cities and towns across the world.
Medical Geography
Medical geography focuses on patterns of disease and
death—of how diseases spread, for example, and how
variations in morbidity and mortality rates reflect local
environments—and on geographies of health care
provision.
Developmental Geography
Development geography refers to the standard of
living and quality of life of its human inhabitants. In
this context, development is a process of change
that affects people's lives. It may involve an
improvement in the quality of life as perceived by the
people undergoing change.
Demography
It is the science of populations. Demographers seek to
understand population dynamics by investigating
three main demographic processes: birth, migration,
and aging (including death)
