Lesson 3: Early Literacy Instructi
on: How Do We Teach?
Prong 1 - Genuine Love for Reading
(GLR)
1) Prong 1 aims to immerse the child in literature
and develop a deep and lasting love for
reading. Finding a good, interesting story and
age-appropriate story is the first step to this
prong. The message of the story should be very
clear to the teacher as this will be the basis of
the development of the lesson. Pre-reading
activities such as unlocking of vocabulary,
motivating student interest and setting a
purpose for reading or listening happens in this
prong. The aim is to stimulate students’
enthusiasm for reading.
Prong 2 - Critical Thinking (CT)
1) This prong is about enabling children to reflect
on and think about the story. After reading the
story, there can be a discussion where the
children are guided to a better understanding
of the events and the message of the story.
Creative exercises such as role-playing and
writing activities allow children to give their
own interpretation of events in the story.
Through this prong, vocabulary, listening
comprehension and oral language are
developed and critical thinking is applied daily
and becomes a habit.
