HISTORY BACKGROUND
• After its discovery by Columbus in 1492, the
island was occupied by Spaniards, Hispaniola
became the fist European settlement of the New
World.
• It was under Haitian rule from 1822 till 1844
• Dominican Republic gained independence from
Haiti in 1844
• Santo Domingo, the country’s capital, is the
oldest city of the Americas
POLITICAL SYSTEM
The Dominican Republic is a representative democracy with
government authority divided among independent executive,
legislative and judicial branches.
The Dominican Republic has a multi-party political system with
national elections every four years.
A president is elected by the people and can only hold office for four
years at a time. The Constitution states that he/she can not be re-
elected and in an election they must win by 50 percent plus one
vote.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS
The Dominican Republic has the largest economy of Central
America and the Caribbean. The country has weathered the
global economic crisis well and in 2010 experienced one of the
highest growth rates in the region
