Why are polymer solutions important?

Molecular characterization
Media for polymerization
Polymer processing (fibers, blends)
Polymer application (paints, adhesives)

Will a given polymer dissolve in a particular

solvent?

Will a given polymer mix with another polymer?

Ideal polymer vs Ideal gas

Ideal polymer has no interactions

between monomers, except between
neighbors along the chain

Similar to an ideal gas that has all

sorts of rotations and vibrations in the
molecule, but no interactions
between molecules

Ideal polymer chains are good models

for polymer melts, concentrated
solutions and dilute solutions at
theta-temperature
