BASIC ELECTRICITY

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND

MAINTENANCE
OBJECTIVES:
• Define what is Electricity.
• Determine how electricity works
• Recognize the two charges of electricity,
Conductors and insulators, and the two
types of circuits.
PRE ACTIVITY
THINK AND BE FAST!!!

IN 4 GROUPS, YOU WILL BE GIVEN SET OF PUZZLES.

SOLVE EACH WITHIN 3 MINS., IF YOU ARE DONE PUT IN
THE BOARD.THE FASTEST WILL GAIN EXTRA POINTS.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ELECTRICITY IN OUR
DAILY LIVES?

CAN YOU IMAGINE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY

BEING DISCOVERED?
ELECTRICITY
• Electricity is the presence and flow of
electric charge. Using electricity we can transfer
energy in ways that allow us to accomplish
common chores.[1] Its best-known form is the
flow of electrons through conductors such as
copper wires.
HOW ELECTRICITY WORKS?
• BENJAMIN FRANKLIN KITE EXPERIMENT
TYPES OF ELECTRICITY

• ALTERNATING CURRENT
CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS
ACTIVITY: WHERE SHOULD I BELONG?

PAPER AND PEN TEST:

CLASSIFY EACH PICTURE WHERE THEY SHOULD BELONG.

WOULD IT BE CONDUCTORS OR INSULATORS?

TWO TYPES OF CIRCUITS
ASSIGNMENT

• AT HOME, IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK

LIST DOWN AT LEAST 15 TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT IN ELECTRICITY AND THEIR
USES.
ELECTRICAL TOOLS, SUPPLIES AND
MATERIALS
• SCREWDRIVERS.
These are used to drive in or move screws that fasten electrical wires
and other electrical accessories.

• PLIERS
Used to grip, pull, and cut electrical wires.
4 BASIC TYPES OF PLIERS
• CUTTER- has sharp blades that are commonly used to cut
wires and to remove a portion of the wire insulation
(stripping)
LONG- NOSE- with tapered elongated nose to reach a narrow
spaces that standard pliers cannot reach
MECHANICAL- has viselike teeth that enables a firm grip,
hold, cut electrical wires, cables and even small nails.
COMBINATION PLIER- the nose portion incorporates both
teeth portion for stripping, as well as bladed portion for
cutting.
• ELECTRICAL DRILL AND DRILL BIT-
used to bore holes for screws or bolts to
secure devices, or for passage of wires.

• Multitester VOM( Volt- Ohm- Milliameter)

• AMMETER – another testing equipment

used to measure current
ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS
• ELECTRICAL WIRES- usually made
of copper ; an electrical wire must be
large enough to carry the current and
must be properly insulated so that the
circuit wire will not be easily shorted.

ELECTRICAL JOINTS
AND SPLICES

ELECTRICITY ACTIVITY NO. 1

• Make splice and joints individual

CHARGE - IS THE PRESSURE OR FORCE OR
POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE THAT ENABLES
SOMETHING TO MOVE.
• TWO TYPES OF CHARGE:
PROTONS – ARE POSITIVILY CHARGE PARTICLE
ELECTRONS – ARE NEGATIVELY CHARGED.
CONDUCTORS – MATERIALS WITH VERY LOW RESISTANCE ;EASILY
PERMITS THE FLOW OF CURRENT
INSULTORS
