What is an energy drink?

■ Energy drinks are beverages


that increases a person’s
energy level making the person
more aware and alert.
■ Caffeine is one of the main
primary source in an energy
drink that contributes towards
the effects in the body.

HISTORY OF ENRGY DRINK:
1930:The first introduction of energy drinks was coca cola as it contained caffeine and
cocaine.

1950: Taisho Pharmaceuticals in Japan makes the first real energy drink after postwar. This
was really the evolutionary breakthrough of energy drinks.

1997:Redbull introduced in Southeast Asia and as a result was known as « Thai Red Bull ».

2005:Four Loko introduced,first alcoholic energy drink which was very popular among
teenagers and college students.Mixing a stimulant like caffeine and a depressant like alchool.
HealthRisks:  Energy Drinks have been implicated in a
number of health-related concerns in recent
years .
 Some negative health impacts include
diabets,dental health,obesity,cardiovascular
effects,etc.
 The large amounts of sugar in the drinks can
cause dental decay and lead to weight gain.
With weight gain comes an increased risk of
weight related conditions, such as blood
pressure and type 2 diabetes.
 Because caffeine interfers with intestinal
calcium absorption,energy drinks may cause
problems for strong bone development.
Target Population
■ 65% of the people who buy energy drinks
are ages between 13-35.Mostally are males.
■ Students in college or high school generally
use them to stay awake for studying for a
test .
■ Athletes use them before games to gain
energy and be able to move/run more.
■ Energy drinks are very popular drink
mixers (Redbull).

INGREDIENTS
Caffeine
■ 70 to 200mg in comparison to
a cup of instant coffee which
has 40 to 80mg and coke has
34mg.
■ Side effects of caffeine kicks
in after 400mg (refer to side
effects section)
Taurine
■ It’s an acid that is naturally
produced by the body.
Therfore,there is no need for
supplements and has been
originally banned from France,
Denmark and Norway.
Guarana

■ It’s comes from a native


plant in South America.It
is 3-4 % caffeine vs Arabic
coffee which 1-2%
Vitamin B
■ Helps to convert food
into energy.
However,most people
get adequate levels of B
vitamins naturally
though diets.
Sugar
■ Large amount of sugar can cause your body to
feel energized for a short period of time and
often can lead your body to crash.

REMEMBER
• The most important thing people should know about energy
drinks is that even though they are legal they can do a lot of
damage.They are okay in small amounts,but they are still a drug.
