 Ability to understand spoken English fluently
STRATEGIES IN LISTENING IN
TOEFL TEST
1. Get organized (adjust the volume first, prepare to listen)
2. Don’t get distracted
3. Pay attention to introduction (ex : listen to a conversation
between two student in campus)
4. Learn daily and campus vocabulary
5. Try to minimize noises
6. Don’t ask your friend in the middle of conversation when
you miss something, because the conversation will be
repeated one more time
7. Concentrate and stay calm
TYPES OF QUESTIONS OF LISTENING
IN TOEFL (CD1-TRACK1-1.14-4.24)
1. PURPOSE
 You will be asked to explain why the speakers are having a
conversation
 EXAMPLE :
Why does the man want to talk with the woman?
a. To ask her to help him study for the exam

b. To get some handouts for a class he has missed

c. To clarify his understanding of the review session

d. To find out her opinion of Professor Carson

2. DETAIL
 You will be asked to answer a question about specific point in the
conversation
 EXAMPLE :
Why does the woman think that the review session will be helpful?
a. Because she has some questions that she wants to ask the professor

b. Because Professor Carson will tell them some of the test questions

c. Because it helps to hear the answers to questions that other people


ask
d. Because she needs an individual conference with the Professor

 You will be asked to draw a conclusion based on
information in the conversation
 EXAMPLE :

4. PRAGMATICS
 You will be asked to understand the purpose or motivation
of the speaker (you may need to interpret the speaker’s
attitude or doubt about something in the conversation)
 EXAMPLE :
Why does the man say this: “yeah, but still…”?

b. He agrees with the woman about the attendance policy

c. He wants to change the subject that they are discussing
