Atomic Theory

What is an  An atom is the smallest particle of an element that still has the
properties of the element.
atom?
How small is
an atom?
Take a look at the thickness of your hair – in that thickness (or diameter) of hair, there
are approximately  4.543 X 10^55 atoms

That's 45430000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 atoms. DUDE.

 Although atoms are TINY, there are even smaller particles inside
them called subatomic particles
Subatomic  Protons – positive charge, symbol: p⁺
particles  Neutrons – neutral charge, symbol: n⁰
 Electrons  – negative charge, symbol: e⁻
 Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus or the center of the
atom
 The number of protons in the atom determines its identity
 eg. Carbon atoms always have 6 protons

 Electrons are in the space surrounding the nucleus

 The nucleus is SUPER dense. Most of the atom's weight comes
from the nucleus but its volume is really small.
 MOST of the atom is empty space!
