John Dalton
Dalton was a scientist in the early 1800's and we call
him the "Father of Modern Chemistry". He believed
atoms are like a billiard ball. (solid spheres)

He suggested that:

- all matter is made of small particles called atoms

- atoms cannot be created, destroyed or divided by
chemical changes
- all atoms of the same element have the same size,
mass, and chemical properties
- atoms of a given element are different from the atoms
of a different element
- compounds form when atoms of different elemnts link
together in certain ways

JJ Thomson

 JJ Thomson did experiments with a cathode ray tube (CRT) and

learned that atoms have negatively charged particles within
them.

 He suggested atoms look like "plum pudding" (English

dessert) or "blue berry muffins" as the negatively charged
particles are scattered throughout the atom.
