Introduction
It is well-known that the southern part of Davao City
mostly consists of residential lots. With the current
government focusing not only in the downtown part of
the city but also in the southern and northern parts, it is
likely that these areas be developed in the
commercialized sense. Bangkal area, for example, has two
existing elementary schools and an upcoming senior high
school along the highway. Therefore, the number of
pedestrians in this area will eventually increase in the
coming years.
Problem
More pedestrians are expected; especially students to
cross the Highway along Bangkal area therefore the
wideness of the highway is a contributing factor to car
accidents.
Objectives of the Study
• The primary objective of this study is to assess the traffic volume and the
severity of occurrence of accidents from Balusong, Matina to Royal Valley,
Bangkal.
• Separation of maneuver areas
• Control of speed
• Blockage of prohibited movements
• Provide space for traffic control devices
• Segregation of non-homogeneous flows
• Protection of pedestrians and reduction of crossing distances between
refuses
Significance of the study
This study aims to reduce pedestrian crashes. Separating traffic moving
in opposite directions to reduce head-on and overtaking crashes.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
• This paper will be limited to the areas between Matina Balusong and
Royal Valley Bangkal, Davao City.
• The solutions presented in this paper will only be construction of
Traffic Island Refuge.
Variables Application methods

Traffic volume Apply ADT (Average Daily Traffic, vehicles/d).

Left- & right-turn traffic volume Apply the number of right-turn vehicles passing the intersection for 15 minutes
dividing into major road and minor road.
METHODOLO
Apply the number of pedestrians crossing the intersection for 15 minutes dividing
Pedestrian traffic volume into major road and minor road.

Cycle time Apply the whole cycle running at the intersection.

Apply the number of accidents taken place at the intersection. (dummy variable:
0 for no accident, 1 for 1 or more accidents)
Number of accidents

Apply the total width of main lanes excluding left- and right-turn lanes divided by
Lane width the number of main lanes.

Existence of major road only Apply the existence of major road left-turn only and right-turn only lanes with
GY

lane(s) dummy variable 1 for yes and 0 for no.

Existence of minor road only Apply the existence of minor road left-turn only and right-turn only lanes with
lane(s) dummy variable 1 for yes and 0 for no.

Apply the number of main road lanes excluding left-turn and right-turn lanes after
Number of lanes dividing into major and minor roads.

Apply crossing patterns with dummy variable 1 for acute angle and 0 for right
Crossing pattern
angle, diving the crossing patterns into acute and right angles.
