(1) Starting off. When the vehicle starts off, a large amount of power is required,
so the 1st gear, which has the largest driving force, is used.
(2) When driving, the 2nd and 3rd gears are used to increase the vehicle speed.
The gears are used because there is an upper limit to the vehicle speed in
1st gear.
(3) High-speed driving, the 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are used to further increase the
vehicle speed with small driving force, lowering the engine speed
improves fuel consumption.
(4) Backing up, the reverse gear is used, the reverse idler gear is added, the
reverse gear turns in reverse, and the vehicle backs up.

Transmission construction
Manual transmissions are located to the rear of vertically mounted engines in FR vehicles.
GEAR TYPES
Spur gear
A number of different gears are used in an automobile for transmitting rotating
power. The gears are classified into several types according to the shape of the
teeth. The most simple form of gear teeth used in a transmission is the spur
gear.

Helical gear
It has twisted teeth, which are positioned at a certain angle to the axis of the gear,
this permits a large contact area, it causes an increase in both strength and in the
fatigue limit of the gear as well as quiet operation.

Transmission layout
Manual layout
The input shaft and the output shaft are located on the same axis and the
counter gear integrates the input shaft and the output shaft to transmit power.

Transaxle
A transaxle, in which the transmission and differential are integrated, is used on
front-wheel drive vehicles & midship vehicles.

Drive Train
When the rotation and torque of the input shaft is transmitted to the output
shaft, the speed of the rotation decreases and the torque increases according to
the reduction ratio of the gears.
Manual transaxles
Manual transaxles are located at the left end or right end of transversely
mounted engines in FF vehicles.

• 1st gear
The speed gear of the output shaft rotating meshed with the 1st gear of the
input shaft transmits power to the differential through the drive pinion.
