Assume this to
happen before
industrial
revolution.

Person A needs
to cross n reach
person B.
Person A uses rock to fill up the
gap.

Filling the entire depth and blocking the water in

process.
Takes up lot of resources & time consuming
They eventually move the
rocks underneath to let the
water flow.

The rocks slide down closing

the whole.
That's when they
noticed a shape the in
void.

An arch (aesthetical
element)
Led to experimenting
with more arches.
Reduction of materials to perform the
same task .

Creating an arch that is structurally stable

and functional and aesthetic in nature.
Industrial revolution happened

Invention
of trusses

Eliminating rock entirely &

using iron trusses to build.
The arch goes to the top.
Discovery of steel

People build
posts & hang
the bridge
creating an
inverted arch.

Reduced
amount of
resources &
energy to
perform a task.
With time steel became stronger &
thinner, so spans kept increasing.

The purpose has always been the same, like the factors considered while building them
1. Crossing from one end to another.(primary goal)
2. Stability & safety factor.
3. Material & sense of aesthetic involvement that has a functional value to it.
The golden gate bridge.
Both aesthetically & structurally remarkable.
