SUCCESSFULLY

Areas to be Covered:

Appearance:
A).Presenting yourself and Documents:

1. Use formal dress to appear for an


interview.

2. Avoid using new clothes because one


may not know how to function in them.

3. It is not wise to change usual hair


styles or clothing patterns as they will
inconvenience the candidate.
4. Use executive clothing, deep and
bright colours may not suit the
occasion.

5. Cloths have to be clean and ironed to


represent order and discipline.

6. Carry a pen in the pocket or in the


folder.
7. Carry all the documents in an order
in a folder/file.

8. Avoid carrying documents in an


envelope as it will take time to show
them to the interviewers.

9. Carry only relevant documents.


10. Copy of the application sent and bio-
data and certificate of qualifying
examination are important documents.

11. Carrying certificates and documents


in a plastic bag will not give an
impression of quality and class.

12. Do not present any certificate or


documents unless asked for.
13. Remember to collect all the
certificates given for perusal at the
interview.

B).Entry, Seating and Exit:
1. Know at the door and then enter even
if your name is called out.

2. Greet the interviewers as soon as you


enter, the lady first and the gentlemen
thereafter.

3. Sit down only after you are asked to.


4. Remember to say ‘Thank you’ before
being seated.

5. Avoid pulling a chair. Instead, lift it if


necessary and always enter from the
right side of the chair.

6. Sit without crossing legs and sit


straight.
7. Look at the interviewers instead of
looking down.

8. Keep whatever paper materials you


carry on your lap, and not on the
table.

9. Bend forward while answering


questions.
10. While answering a questioner,
remember to look at the other
interviewers also. Avoid fidgeting like
touching moustache, scratching nose
or arranging hair.

11. Avoid carrying anything like a key


bunch or a pen in your hands.

12. At the end of the interview, get up


and move out only after thanking
interviewers.
13. While moving out, step back first,
then turn and walk away.
While answering questions!
C). Answering Questions:

1. Listen to questions carefully to


comprehend. If you have not
understood a question, politely
request for a repeat.

2. Give short answers unless asked for


longer ones.

3. Be confident but not arrogant.


4. Be firm when you are sure, otherwise
start statements with “I think” or “As
far as I know”.

5. Mouth all words clearly and speak


loud enough to hear.

6. Answer immediately without wasting


time.
7. Avoid being humorous or ironical in
your answers.

8. Keep looking at the interviewers and


never at other things in the room or
outside.

9. Give authentic information about any


details connected with your bio-data.
10. It is not advisable to take anything
from the table in front of the
interviewers.

11. Avoid tightening a tie or pulling at


the dress while answering any
question; it reflects your tension.

12. Answers should not be given in a


raised voice even when the question
comes in that manner.
13. Answer questions in simple single
sentences.

14. If you are complimented for the


answers, remember to ‘thank’ the
interviewer.

15. If your answer or opinions are


rejected by the interviewer, remember
to say ‘sorry’.
16. Avoid giving additional information
unless asked for.

17.Avoid repeating answers, phrases or


words.

18. Be aware of mannerisms and avoid


them.
While Interacting with the members
D).While interacting with the
Inverviewers:
1. Keep a smiling face so as to welcome
any question. (As you know Smile costs
nothing)

2. Avoid any disagreement with the


interviewer unless it involves your belief
systems.

3. If or when the candidate has to disagree


with the interviewer do it politely after
expressing regret or asking for a pardon.
4. It is unwise to contradict an answer
through a subsequent answer.

5. If an error is brought to the notice of


a candidate, he should accept the
same.

6. Use a language that is easy to


understand but formal in its usage.
7. A candidate should avoid offering her
hand for a hand shake. All the same,
if offered by the interviewer, she
should accept it.

8. While a male candidate has to stand


up to shake hands, a lady may accept
an offer while being seated.
9. A candidate’s behaviour should
convince the interviewer about the
quality of personality that the
candidate has.

10. Avoid any exhibition of emotion


about an answer that a candidate
considers very dear or correct.
11. The candidate should not condemn
or deprecate any other person, group,
community or nation during an
interview.

12. If or when a candidate is asked


about achievements or successes
she should take care to list only those
which can be proved with evidence.
13. There is nothing wrong in
requesting an interviewer to ask a
candidate questions on a subject of
her choice.

14. Once the subject is announced as


the favoured one, a candidate should
make sure that all questions are
answered.

9. Don’t talk too fast sacrificing clarity;


don’t be dragging either.

10. Be polite; show no sign of


arrogance or superiority or inferiority.

11. Show willingness for co-operation


and team work.
12. If someone asks your views on a
given topic, take it as an opportunity
to speak. Don’t shy away from it.

13. Check your body language.

14. Continue to be pleasant; a smile


helps a lot.

15. Look at the members by turn.


16. Don’t hit on the table to prove a
point.

17. Speak patiently and convincingly.

18. Be a good listener

19. Don’t explode if anyone gives a


blunder
20. Appreciate good views expressed by
others.

21. Don’t insult a person or a group.

22. Be impartial. Keep a balanced view.

23. If you present an argument, give


facts to support it.
24. Discuss and not dispute (Produce
light and not heat)

25. Don’t be unduly emotional during


interview.

26. Be broad-minded in your approach.

27. Meet opposition (interviewers) with


a smile.
28. Arrange your facts logically.

29. Use simple language as far as possible.

30. Develop language skills including basic


grammar, pronunciations and effective
expressions.

31. Gather full details of controversial topics


of public interest by following daily news
papers, magazines etc.,
