WHAT IS
PASSIVE
VOICE?
We use the passive voice when the person or
thing that causes the action is unknown or
unimportant.

ACTIVE VOICE
The subject is the protagonist in the sentence.
Let’s look at some examples…

John writes an email to his boss.

My mom bakes a cake for my birthday.

The kids throw rocks to the window.

PASSIVE VOICE
The object is the protagonist of the sentence.
What is the object in a sentence?
✘ It is the result of the action
✘ Sometimes we can see the object (a thing) and
sometimes we can’t see it (idea or concept)

Write -> a letter, a book, a message, an email Bake -> a


cake, some bread, a cupcake
Throw - > a ball, a rock, a fit, an idea

How do we write this sentence in passive
voice?

John writes an email to his boss.

An email is written by John for his boss.

Last example…

The kids throw rocks to the window.

Rocks are thrown by the kids to the window.

Passive Voice
Let’s look at the difference in structure
between active and passive voice…

My mom bakes a cake for my birthday.

A cake is baked by my mom for my birthday.

Let’s convert some sentences from active to
passive
1. Mr. Wilson teaches art class. 1. Art class is taught by Mr. Wilson.

2. My friends draw cartoons. 2. Cartoons are drawn by my friends.

3. The computer teacher creates passwords. 3. Passwords are created by the computer teacher.
4. Instagram photos are uploaded by my sister and I.
4. My sister and I upload Instagram photos.

Object + to be + past participle + by subject + complement.
