INTRODUCTION
The main aim of the research is to establish
relationships between rainfall intensity,
infiltration rate and storm water runoff to urban
drains as well as to manage stormwater runoff
and improve quality after infiltrating through the
pervious pavement.
What is Storm water Runoff?
O Stormwater runoff is rainfall that flows over the
ground surface. It is created when rain falls on
roads, driveways, parking lots, rooftops and other
paved surfaces that do not allow water to soak into
the ground.
What is Storm water Runoff Solution ?

• Stormwater Runoff solution means to manage

surface runoff. It can be applied in rural areas
(e.g. to harvest precipitation water), but is
essential in urban areas where run-off cannot
infiltrate because the surfaces are
impermeable.
Why permeable
pavement?
Why permeable pavement?
• PPs are designed to let water pass through the
pavement into the soil below, returning
naturally into the groundwater.

Permeable pavements can

help filter out pollutants that contribute
• to water pollution.
PPs can also offer an elegant, cost-effective
solution to stormwater runoff management.
What is permeable pavement?

O Permeable pavement (PP) is a modified form

of asphalt or concrete with a top layer that is
pervious to water due to voids intentionally
created during mixing.
Types of permeable pavement
APPLICATION
The ideal application is around
buildings (walkways, courtyards,
etc.) and parking areas, as well as
low-volume roadways.

Application on highways,where it
could be used in shoulder and
median construction for
stormwater runoff .

There may also be application for

its use as a surface material to
reduce hydroplaning, splash and
spray,and reduce tire-pavement
noise.
Maintenance
• PPs require frequent maintenance because
grit or gravel can block the open pores.

• This is commonly done by industrial vacuums

that suck up all the sediment.

• If maintenance is not carried out on a

regular basis, the porous pavements can begin
to function more like impervious surfaces.
Advantages
• 1.PPs may give urban trees the rooting space they need
to grow to full size.
• 2. Quantity and Flood Control.
• 3. Water Quality Treatment
• 4. Recharges Groundwater to Underlying Aquifers
• 5. Allows for Reduction of Storm water Infrastructure
(Piping, Catch-Basins, Retention Ponds, Curbing, etc.)
• 6.Reduces spray from traveling vehicles
• 7. Maintains Traction While Wet.
• 8. Extended Pavement Life Due to Well Drained Base
Disadvantages
1. Permeable pavement is not ideal for high
traffic/ high speed area because it has lower
load bearing capacity than conventional
pavement.
2. Nor should it be used on stormwater with high
pollutant loads because stormwater cannot be
pretreated prior to infiltration.
3. Frequent maintenance is required
4. Difficult in providing the reinforcements
Conclusion
Permeable pavements could play an important
role in Water Sensitive Urban Design as it helps
to reduce peak flows, improves stormwater
quality and if properly designed, permits the
infiltrated water to be harvested to be put to
productive use.
