COURSEWORK 1 - BRIEFING SHEET

COURSE MODULE (and code): CEN306 - Water Resources Engineering 2

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Wastewater treatment design
Lecturer responsible: Dr Xiaonan Tang
Date set: Monday, April 5, 2021
Required date of submission: Friday, May 14, 2021 (see online submission on LM)
Required format of submission: Standard report
Penalty scheme for late submission: Standard university scheme

Aims: To give students experience in the fundamental aspects of designing a wastewater treatment plant
tertiary wastewater treatment using biological and chemical methods.

Outline:
1. Determination of inlet wastewater characteristics required for the design.
2. Designing the volumes of the biological tanks.
3. Selecting the plant layout.
4. Report writing - Present your results, remember to include your calculations and assumptions.

Recommended reading: Lecture notes.

At the end of this assignment a student should be able to:

o Design for biological nitrogen removal
o Design for biological phosphorous removal
o Design for chemical phosphorous removal

• Determine the volumes of the biological treatment tanks for a wastewater treatment plant that
can do nitrification, denitrification, and biological/chemical P removal.
• Calculate the amount of Al2(SO4)3 needed for chemical P removal and the oxygen demand for
the aeration tank.
• The minimum temperature for the wastewater is 12oC. Assume a return sludge flow of 1.5 times
the design inflow rate. Effluent standards for the plant are: COD: 60 mg/l, TN: 15 mg/l, TP: 0.5
mg/l.
• Propose a layout for the plant and explain the reasons for your choice of layout.
