REPETITION
Define Repetition: When a design or shape is repeated in a garment
Garment Description:
Valentino Spring 2014
Black dress with repeated blue and yellow graphics design that is
linear in appearance
This garment displays repetition:
• The patterns on this dress are repeated
• Pattern are going the same direction from the top to bottom
• The three necklace also shows a repetition
• The circle graphics also have a repetition appearance
PARALLELISM
Define parallelism: An example of this are stripes
Garment Description:

The dress is repeated with stripes at different directions
that shows a parallelism appearance
This garment displays parallelism:
• There are stripes going sideways on the top front of
the dress
• Stripes going horizontally on the sleeves
• Stripes going diagonal on the bottom
• Stripes are of the same proportion
SEQUENCE
Define Sequence: Describe the dynamic unity or the orderly
movement that implies continuity. It may or may not be used as a
repetition.
Garment Description:
The dress shows an continuity and it also shows a different things one
after another in an order. You can see that it goes from black, blue then
pink.
This garment displays sequence:
• This dress shows that is has a continuity
• The dress shows an order of different colors
• The dress looks like a spiral which is a good example of a sequence
• Directional
HARMONY
Define Harmony: Consistency in mood, pleasing combination and
design elements relate to and complement each other
Garment Description:
This garment shows a calming combination of flowers
This garment displays harmony:
• Repetition of flowers all over the dress that gives off a pleasing
feeling.
• Shows an agreement in feeling of the dress
• Represents a mood from the garment
• Pattern shows a calming combination of flowers
TRANSITION
Define Transition: Describes as a smooth change and also a
continuous change of the quantity of the element. An example of a
transition appearance are darts and flares.
Garment Description:
You can see that the first red and white stripes dress changes to black
smoothly
This garment displays Transition:
• Smooth change from red to black
• No breaking point
• The middle stripe changes from white to black
• Structural darts
CONCENTRICITY
Define Concentricity: circles or other shapes that share the same
center.
Garment Description:
This garment shows an arc and circles throughout the garment.
This garment displays Concentricity:
• Circle shapes throughout the garment that shares the same
center
• Sequence of larger shapes
• Makes a pattern out of the circle and shapes
BALANCE
Define Balance:
Feeling when both sides of the dress are even of visual weight
within a form.
Garment Description:
This garment shows a balance when you see it visually that both
side of the dress shows an even structure.
This garment displays Balance:
• Formal balance in which both side of garment are the same
• Even sides are the same
• Weight throughout the form
PROPORTION
Define Proportion: Proportion in art is the comparative
harmonious relationship between two or more elements in a
composition
Garment Description:
This garment shows a proportion of the skirt. It is equally on both
sides.
This garment displays proportion:
• Have the same features
• The skirt is equally to the top
• Equals on both sides (top to bottom)
• Same size
RHYTHM
Define rhythm: the feeling of organized movement that is
created by movement of our own eyes

• A feeling of movement of the black/blue flared dress
• The curve lines carry the eye
• The blue fade on the dress is eye catching
• The pace of how the dress appears.
EMPHASIS
Define Emphasis: a focus point that attracts the viewer’s attention.
It is achieved by contrast, isolation and placement.
Garment Description on Emphasis:
Channel Spring
The dress shows an emphasis on the wide shoulders
This garment displays emphasis:
• Displays emphasis on the wide shoulders
• The black lines going horizontally on the dress shows emphasis
and gives the dress a more bolder look
• The left with sheer shows an emphasis of the shoulders
• Black lines that are curvy going towards the bottom
