• The electric power delivery system is often
referred as the greatest and most complex
machine ever built. It includes wires, electrical
machines, electric towers, transformers,
circuit breakers… put together in some
fashion.
• The existing electricity grid is unidirectional in
nature.
What is the Smart Grid?
• My definition:
– The use of information technology to make
electricity work better:
– Lower emissions
– Greater economic efficiency
• Lower costs to consumers and producers
– Increased reliability
What makes the grid smart?
Benefits of Smart Grid
What is Smart Grid?
Introduction
• The electric power grid infrastructure was built more than 50
years ago. It can be compared to a complex spider web of
power lines and aging networks and systems and outdated
communications. Additionally, a growing demand for lower
carbon emissions, renewable energy sources, improved system
reliability and security exists.
• All these requirements indicate the need for modernization of
the grid by installing intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), such
as sensors, electronic switches, smart meters with advanced
communication and data acquisition. Another required item is
an interactive software with real-time control that would
optimize the operation of the entire electrical system and make
more efficient utilization of the grid. The grid that includes
these devices and satisfies the above requirements is called the
smart grid.
