 Taps and dies are cutting tools used to create screw threads, which is
called threading

 The process of cutting threads using a tap is called tapping, whereas


the process using a die is called threading

 Joseph Clement was one such early vendor of taps and dies, starting in
1828

 The largest tap and die company to exist in the United States was
Greenfield Tap & Die, The GTD brand is now a part of Widia
Products Group
Classification :

The classification of the taps can done as follow:


 Form A
 Form B

 Form C

 Form D

 Form E
Tolerance Classes
The taps can be further divided into two type:

Cut taps
Form taps
FORM TAP
The teeth's of the form tap press into the material
The material starts to flow
The material fills the gap between the Tap and the
material
The fishmouth is fully formed
Pros and cons:
 No chips, therefore no problems with chip removal
 Better surface finish of the thread
 Higher cutting speed (approx. doubled)
 Increased tool life
 Brittle materials (i.e. grey cast iron) are not suitable
 Workpiece material must have a ductility coefficient
of at least 10%
Cut taps
The cut taps can be described as cutting of the threads
in a hole by chipping of the metals rather than
forming
The chip evacuation is a very important criteria
Suitable for all type of material cast iron , aluminum
etc
The tolerances are the same as achieved by form taps
Chip evacuation with a helical and straight fluted tap
